Sea Story or Comment : I am also a former snype, MM2 main control. I made the last WestPac cruise that greyhound made before decommisioning. We got to go to Australia, and rode out a Typhoon on the way back to San Diego. I've just thinking back about stuff all week long. Believe me. I remember some of the guys I served with. I remember that fantastic ship we could run 32 ++ knotts on 2 boilers most any time. We did plane guard for the Ranger, Hancock, and others. The NAVY wanted at least 32 knotts wind on the flight deck when launching F4 Phantoms. If you are ever are in North Carolina lets have a beer, and chat about it. I just wanted to say Hey.

Sea Story or Comment : I went topside to empty the after- engine room
garbage can on the 00 to 04 watch. This was somewhere near Japan in 1955 and we
were in the middle of a raging storm. I stuck my head out the hatch for a
look and told MM2 Shaneyfelt that it was to rough out there. He said we
don't let a little thing like weather keep us from emptying our garbage. I took
the can up the ladder and steped out, waited for the ship to roll to the
starboard side then made a run for the rail. Just as I reached over the side
with the can a huge wave grabbed me and hung me over the rail head first then
picked me up again and washed me down the deck to the fantail. I managed to
make it back down to the engine room raging and cussing at everyone present.
A moral to this story? Sailors better be good swimmers!
