The History Of Guiding
At the Scouts first rally at Crystal Palace in 1909 Baden Powell was faced with a small group of girls representing hundreds of others who wanted to become Scouts too. In an age where all skirts were ankle length and girls weren't allowed to run or play the idea of girls hiking climbing and camping was outrageous. Angry critics told the people girl scouting was a mischevious new developement and an idiotic sport.
However the girl's won and in 1910 Baden Powell formed the Girl Guides and asked his sister Agnes to look after the brand new organisation. A few years later his wife Olave became involved and in 1918 she was appointed Chief Guide.
