Holy Redeemer Preschool
SEPTEMBER NEWS 2003
Hello Everyone!  It feels good to start a new school year after such a long, wet summer.  We are looking forward to getting to know our new students and catching up with those who have been here before.  Many new and exciting things are being prepared for the children and we anticipate a great year.

As always, the beginning of the school year is filled with a lot of information for you and your child.  If at any time you have a question about something, please do not hesitate to ask.  We want you to feel comfortable in being part of your child's preschool experience.  At Holy Redeemer Preschool, we believe that the goals of home and school are best met when parents and teacher work together to support each other as a team.  Together we are seeking ways to enhance each child's social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual development.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN SEPTEMBER

The month of September will be spent helping your child adjust to his or her social environment.  We will guide students through the beginning of the year introducing them to classroom procedures and familiarizing them with the school building.  REMEMBER:
Some children require more time to adjust to a new environment than others. This adjustment period is often more difficult for parents than it is for the child.  We are confident that, in time, your child will not only adjust, but also look forward to coming to school and seeing new friends.

Our September themes include "Back to School", "Colors", "My Friends and Me", and "Apples".  Emphasis on self and friends will be presented through music, literature, play, art, religion, and many other shared activities.

On
September 18th (PK 3) and September 19th (PK4&5), the preschool classes will celebrate "Favorite Color Day".  On this day, the children in the preschool classes are to wear clothing of their favorite color if they wish and everyone in the class is to bring one show-and-tell item that is their favorite color to school.  Please choose one color for your child so that their clothing and show and tell item match.  The show-and-tell item must be sent in a (brown) bag with your child's name clearly written on it.  Show and tell items will be shared during Circle Time only.  This item can be anything from a small toy to an everyday object found in the home. Have fun choosing something with your child.

On
September 29th (PK 4&5) and September 30th (PK 3) we will be doing activities with apples in our classroom.  Please send an apple or two to school with your child.  We will be exploring various colors, shapes, and sizes that apples can be, then we will be cutting them up to make our own chunky apple sauce.

BOOK ORDERS
This year we are going to be ordering books through Scholastic Firefly.  Book order forms will be sent out every month with your calendar and newsletter.  These books are often offered at a very reasonable rate and are often worth adding to your child's home library.  There is no need to feel obligated to order books for your child.  They are offered for your enjoyment only.

**Order forms and money for September book orders are
due by Friday, September 12th.  Please send orders to school in an envelope marked "Book Order" and make checks payable to Scholastic Books.
SNACKS, SHOW-AND-TELL, AND BIRTHDAYS

Attached to every newsletter will be a monthly calendar.  This calendar lists all of the special events, days off, snack persons, and birthday celebrations for the month.  Please read through it every month and keep it handy in your home.

When you see your child's name listed on the calendar, this means that it is his or her snack day.  On your child's snack day, you are responsible for bringing snacks, drinks, and cups (if needed) for the entire class.  One gallon of drink is sufficient to serve the entire class.  We appreciate donations of paper products such as napkins and Kleenex for our classroom.
** NOTE:  There CAN NOT be any snacks containing PEANUT BUTTER brought into our classroom this year due to a severe food allergy case in one of the PK classes.  I will inform you of any other instructions pertaining to allergies during the first week of school.  If your child has an allergy to any food and has to have a different snack, please let me know as soon as possible.

Your child may bring an item from home for "Show-and-Tell"
only on his or her snack day. We enjoy pets, baby brothers and sisters, or anything that your child wants to share with the class.  Although we only share items during the designated "Show-and-Tell Time", please don't send breakable or priceless items.
NOTE:
If it is not your child's snack day, please do not allow your child to bring toys from home.

If your child's name appears on the calendar with "B-day" beside it, that means that we will be celebrating his or her birthday on that particular day.  You may send a special snack such as cupcakes if you would like.  Just a little note:  We really discourage cupcakes as a snack unless it is your child's birthday.  The reason for this has nothing to do with their nutritional value, rather children often waste them.  After they lick the icing off, it seems they are finished.
** If your child has a summer birthday, we will be celebrating his or her birthday in May.  It will be marked with "S-B-day".  If you would rather celebrate a summer birthday in a different  month during the school year, please let me know.
