Is a Candidate?
The best success with ortho-K occurs in people of any age who have low amounts of nearsightedness or astigmatism, says Dr. Steven G. Peterson, a San Diego, Calif., optometrist who has been performing ortho-K since 1985. (For instance, that means if you’re nearsighted and you have a prescription between –1.00 D and –5.00D).
The goal is to bring the person’s vision at least to 20/40 (the legal visual minimum for driving in most of the United States). However, many people do achieve 20/20.

Long Does It Take?
Because of new advances in lens technology and design, good results with ortho-K can occur quickly. Using a technique called "accelerated ortho-K," a skilled eyecare professional can change a person’s vision by three to four diopters in about a month, says Dr. Peterson, who adds that the typical time period for regular ortho-K is at least six months.
