Divine Election Watcher!

America is such a wonderful country! On November 2nd Americans will vote and no matter what the election results it is inevitable that U.S. citizens will find themselves better off than anyone could have dreamed possible.

Of course as Election Day approaches, we allow for a few pessimistic souls to think this beautiful country from sea to shining sea might be in for some thick dark political storm clouds.

One very astute observer has characterized the two major political parties in the United States as the party of hatred and the party of fear.

From this observer's viewpoint, the party of hatred is seen as so utterly worshipping government and so thoroughly hating free enterprise that it thinks itself unquestionably righteous to lie, cheat, steal, ransack, and destroy if it will help win an election and move the United States in the direction of European-style bureaucracy-controlled socialism.

This same viewpoint sees the other major party, the party of fear, as so apprehensive about the disintegration of law, order and natural values that it too believes it is useful to worship government and it also feels justified in using deceptive and devilish means to win an election in the hopes of preserving a European-style aristocracy-controlled capitalism.

Two major political parties are seen, both worshipping government, both believing ends vindicate means, neither guided by the spirit of any kind of true and real freedom.

Well, that's one observer ... and maybe we don't see the major parties with quite this same perspective. Surely the dominant parties themselves would never admit underlying motives of hatred and fear. But we do have to admit there is nothing inherently "American," in the historical sense, about the goals and means of the two major U.S. political parties. The American colonists who joined together to break away from the yoke of English rule most decidedly did not worship government.

Some of the American colonials worshipped God. Some worshipped reason. Some worshipped simply "lady liberty," so to speak: the freedom to try, to succeed or fail, and to enjoy the fruits of success or the lessons of failure. But no original American worshipped government. Most perceived a need for a certain amount of government and were willing to put up with some minimum government. But none worshipped government.

We would have to admit many modern Americans have probably forgotten these revolutionary origins and slipped back into the hatred and fear that has long ruled Europe.

Yet we are confident our holy spirit inside us works to release hatred and fear, and establish us in our natural state of freedom, where love and joy and peace abound.

Jesus has given us a new revelation for these modern times, a new understanding of God and reason and freedom: A Course in Miracles . The original American colonists would have loved it.

A Course in Miracles does not talk in terms of politics, but if it did it would tell us that a political party full of hatred and a political party full of fear would not be too much different since hatred is based on fear anyway. If A Course in Miracles were to make political commentary it would say that the only difference in such a case would be that the fear that burns beneath the hatred of one party is of the murderous intensity of 666, whereas the 444 level fear of the other party is merely debilitating and fosters foolish decisions.

A diligent student of A Course in Miracles might also point out that unless some outside influence intervenes, 666 will spur more action than 444. Therefore soon enough, the party of hatred would be expected to win.

Unless....

Unless....

What if there is an election watcher above and beyond it all?

What if, in fact, there is a spiritual voice speaking inside men and women and guiding them as to how to vote on Election Day? Perhaps not everyone would hear such a voice because some might actually prefer to be directed by hatred and fear. But what if many, many voters actually walk into a voting booth, quiet their intellects and egos, and hear the voice of their holy spirit?

Also, wouldn't it be amazing if our holy spirit inspired us to consider candidates of two newer political parties, both of which are much more thoroughly "American," in the historical sense of being closer to the spirit which guided the American colonists in their quest for freedom?

The Libertarian Party is about 30 years old, is America's largest 3rd party in terms of numbers of elected officials around the country, and offers an uncompromising stance for individual liberty. Of all political parties on the scene, this party worships government the least and probably would have appealed to early America's frontiersmen and frontierswomen who were fond of such slogans as: "Live free or die!" or "Don't tread on me!"

In recent years the Libertarian Party has been floundering, primarily because of their boisterous campaigning against government's attempts to restrict gun ownership (which alienates liberal families who fear for their children's lives) and their equally blusterous campaigning against the government's war on drugs and pornography (which disturbs conservative families who fear for their children's moral well-being). Although a small number of LP candidates have won local elections, the national leadership of the party has worked so hard to paint a picture of themselves as different from both liberals and conservatives that they are seen as out of touch with almost everybody, and therefore generally just "out of touch."

Basically the Libertarian Party, as if it were a party of colonial frontiersmen, is strong on "live and let live" and hopelessly weak in political aptitude.

The Constitution Party , although only 12 years old, seems already much more grown up politically than the Libertarian Party, much more spirited, and much faster growing. Perhaps they have learned from the mistakes of the Libertarian Party.

The Constitution Party wholeheartedly believes that a limited amount of government is necessary, which members of the LP will admit but sometimes only grudgingly. Yet the CP does not outright worship government in the European sense. Constitutionalists are perhaps less like frontierspeople of old, but more reminiscent of the middle class in Colonial America, the artisans, craftsmen, and tradesmen.

Many will argue that the one factor which will ultimately limit the Constitution Party's growth is its heavy usage of Christian language. For example, the Preamble to the CP's platform reads: "The Constitution Party gratefully acknowledges the blessing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as Creator, Preserver and Ruler of the Universe and of these United States. We hereby appeal to Him for mercy, aid, comfort, guidance and the protection of His Providence as we work to restore and preserve these United States."

Whew! Such language might immediately alienate Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, religionists of a dozen other religions, as well as non-religionists ... all of which I AM.

In A Course in Miracles, Jesus, as open-minded as a craftsman or tradesman, teaches that we are all in this together and we all ultimately have common goals: "Who are God's teachers? They come from all religions and no religion. They are the ones who have answered. The Call is universal. It goes on all the time everywhere. It calls for teachers to speak for it and redeem the world. A teacher of God is anyone who chooses to be one. His qualification consists solely in this: somehow, somewhere he has made a deliberate choice in which he did not see his interests as apart from someone else's."

If Jesus Christ is truly the ruler of the world, as the Preamble of the Constitution Party proclaims, then everybody is included. But a political party which really does want everybody to include themselves would be well-advised to use language which would invite others in, not alienate them.

So the Constitution Party also has some political strategy lessons to learn.

Yet many of us have registered and are ready to vote. What if we still cannot feel absolute certainty about who to vote for?

Uncertainty would mean we are listening to the wrong part of our mind, wouldn't you say? In A Course in Miracles, Jesus says it this way:

"It is quite possible to listen to God's Voice all through the day without interrupting your regular activities in any way. The part of your mind in which truth abides is in constant communication with God, whether you are aware of it or not. It is the other part of your mind that functions in the world and obeys the world's laws that is constantly distracted, disorganized and highly uncertain."

But we need not fear. Those who allow only their intellects or egos to guide them are simply mistaken and mistakes will be corrected. "Correction is for all who cannot see. To open the eyes of the blind is the Holy Spirit's mission" ... a mission He cannot fail.

Therefore, with trust and confidence we approach Election Day in serene peace, knowing that our holy spirit makes adjustments to election results, no matter what these results are, and continues right along with the Divine Plan for freeing everyone.

How does Paul say it in the Bible? "We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose."

What's so wonderful about America? You can literally imagine Americans entering their polling place from sea to shining sea with joy in their hearts and their minds confident in this truth from A Course in Miracles:

"The Holy Spirit is your guide in choosing. He is in the part of your mind that always speaks for the right choice, because he speaks for God. He is your remaining communication with God, which you can interrupt but cannot destroy. The Holy Spirit is the way in which God's will is done on earth as it is in Heaven."
