"Open Mind!"

The incredible almost world-wide success of the Da Vinci Code novel and movie shows us once again that a vast majority of people are far more interested in entertaining possible solutions to perceived mysteries than in letting go of speculation and totally accepting the one solution to all mysteries. It's a good thing we know not to judge by surface appearances. We might think all these mystery lovers are not really ready for the final solution.

Luckily we see beyond surface appearances and see that all things work together for good. We know every time the ego makes a strange diversion off course into yet another mystery, our holy spirit simultaneously makes an immediate answering course adjustment redirecting us toward ultimate clarity. In the overall historical scheme of things we know the Da Vinci Code phenomenon is serving some good purpose. Could it be that despite surface appearances people all over the world are simply being prepared to hear the true teachings of Jesus Christ?

Is the Holy Grail neither a cup used by Jesus nor the bloodline of Davidic desceant through Jesus’ family, but rather a state of glory and enlightenment easily reached by surrendering to the unedited teachings of Jesus, teachings which have been swept under the rug by authoritarian heirarchies ever since the early years of Paul’s ministry?

Will the Dan Brown-induced interest in a possible Mary Magdalene ministry in Southern France pique the interest of truth seekers? Will widespread discussion of the church's destruction of Southern France’s Cathar sect and Cathar teachings lead modern men and women with open minds to search for a more authentic version of the teachings of Jesus?

Is it possible the popularity of Dan Brown’s novels as well as such books as The Gospel of Mary Magdalene and Holy Blood, Holy Grail (from which Dan Brown plagerized) will lead people to realize that the Holy Bible is incomplete, and to ultimately accept the more comprehensive teachings given by Jesus outside of church hierarchies?

Could it be no accident that Dan Brown invites people to question and doubt the authenticity of church theology these very days when Jesus has only recently given his teachings once again in his revelation for the 21st century: A Course in Miracles?

Many Christians who are open to hearing their holy spirit are nowadays hearing the same message: theology is the booby prize while the experience of God is everything! Yet many are willing to hear only one part of the message: that experience is important. Their addiction to theology does not let them get past their resistance to hearing that theology is actually a deterent to their holy spirit's goal for them.

Hearing only half the message, sincere and well-meaning Christians are constantly holding themselves back from the fullness of the experience. They join in praise and worship, rising somewhat into God experience, only to drop down out of the experience quickly when they feel called upon to once again prove themselves loyal to some theology or another. Then in split mind they dwell in confusion, and wonder why half the time they feel “dry.”

Even spiritual seekers who have long sensed the restrictiveness of organized theology find it hard to resist the temptation to substitute some New Age theology (the blind leading the blind), or even a presumed Course in Miracles theology. Very few are willing to let their theologizing be undone altogether and dwell ONLY in the experience of their holy spirit. So there is always a present sense of confusion.

Now into this confused world Dan Brown suggests a mind opening which allows a glaring implication: “There might be a teaching of Jesus which churches have always suppressed. Maybe not only Mary Magdeline was expunged from official records, but also the teaching she received from her beloved teacher ... a teaching barely spoken since Paul became the master of Christian indoctrination.”

If Christians allow their minds to be opened even a little, and the possibility of a hidden or surpressed teaching of Jesus is accepted even a smidgeon, then there is only one possibility: the truth will prevail. Either widely accepted theology will prove correct, or a teaching which far surpasses conventional, fashionable doctrine will be heard and recognized in mind.

What early Christians apparently did not see and modern Christians are offered another chance to see is: there is nothing to fear from open-mindedness because truth is true and nothing else is true, which means only what is true can ultimately prevail in mind.

Jesus puts it this way: "The Holy Spirit, seeing where you are but knowing you are elsewhere, begins His lesson in simplicity with the fundamental teaching that TRUTH IS TRUE. This is the hardest lesson you will ever learn, and in the end the ONLY one." (ACIM Text, Chap. 14)

Thank you, Jesus, for the good news of Christianity:

"Truth is true.
And nothing else is true.
So I need not fear an open mind!"
