Action Scale Apollo 13

A 1:6 Scale Recreation of Selected Apollo 13 Scenes

The Action Scale Apollo Crew

Two of my collecting passions are GI Joe and Space. What better way to bridge the two themes than to create a GI Joe based Space Adventure. One of the greatest space adventures of our time was the historic flight of Apollo 13 in April of 1970. These pages present images designed to relate the events that took place from April 11 to April 18th, 1970.

My hopes are that these pages will serve as a showcase of the 1:6 space equipment and as a reminder of the heroic deeds performed during the early space exploration program. All of the images on this page were generated by the HoloSuite operator, ScottE, using a camcorder and a Snappy III video capture device. You may use the images for non-commercial purposes, provided that credit for the source of the images is included with their use.

On April 11th, 1970 John Swigert Jr., James Lovell Jr., and Fred Haise Jr. board the Apollo Command Module Odyssey and prepare for liftoff.

The first part of the Apollo 13 mission was pretty much right out of the textbook. Although this was only the 5th manned mission to visit the moon, and the 3rd prepared to land there, the US was already starting to take these flights for granted. The Television networks didn't even see fit to make air time available to broadcast routine video as the crew headed towards the moon.

There was some relief from the cramped space aboard the Command Module Odyssey. The LEM, Aquarius, was docked at the tip of the capsule cone and could be reached by floating through a pair of hatches.

There was also the popular pastime of looking out the windows. The size and location of the windows made for restricted views, but what could be seen was something seen by very few people (then or now).
