Tempe, AZ (AP) - The Hokies returned to the National Championship game following last year's loss to Michigan 38-28. However, this year the Hokies were not to be denied as they handed UCLA a 40-16 defeat. The Hokies got on the scoreboard early as Chris Gary hit Cade Meeks with a short pass on the 2nd play of the game. Meeks eluded a tackler then raced 82 yards for the score. The Hokies led the game at halftime 16-10 thanks to three long field goals by Harry Washington. Washington connected from 54, 54, and 38 during the first half. The Hokies blew the game open in the 3rd quarter when Gary hit Meeks for a 12 yard TD and later found Reggie Esbjorn on a 4 yard score to give the Hokies a 30-10 lead. Washington connected on 42 yard FG in the 4th quarter and Gary found Esbjorn on a 47 yard TD pass to turn the game into a rout. Gary finished the game with 306 passing yards with 96 yards going to Esbjorn and 109 yards to Meeks. Cade Collins led the defense with 6 tackles and John Omens intercepted a pass to go with his 5 tackles. Following the game, Henry Suber whocarried the ball 20 times for 95 yards announced he would forego his senior year to enter the NFL draft.
