Condition:
The guitar was restored in the 1970s. For a complete condition report on the
work that was carried please contact the Collectibles Department.
Some
areas of the paintwork have been restored by artist Jane Millett. In particular
the paintwork to the replacement headstock is not original but has been
carefully matched to that on the original headstock. The paintwork to the body
has minor touch ups to chips and scratches, particularly on the back of the
body. All of the paintwork on the guitar has been sealed to prevent further
damage.
Notes:
Eric Clapton's Gibson SG is undoubtedly one of the most important guitars in
rock history. Not only was it owned and played by one of the legends of
blues/rock music but its dazzling paintwork expresses the psychedelic period of
the late 1960s. Clapton used this guitar extensively while he was a member of
arguably the first supergroup Cream. It was used during recording and onstage.
Clapton played the guitar on Cream's breakthrough hit 'Sunshine Of Your Love'.
This was a watershed period in Clapton's career. He enjoyed worldwide
recognition for the first time and established superstar status.
This
guitar was originally painted by a group of Dutch artists known collectively as
'The Fool', who were employed by The Beatles to design merchandise for their
Apple Boutique which opened December 1967.
Sotheby's are grateful to John
Reynolds of Golden Age Fretted Instruments and Leroy Aiello, guitar restoration
specialist for their invaluable help in cataloguing this guitar.
