The 1940-41 season marked the first time a goalie could not
not be sent to the penalty box
for any minor infraction. Prior
to this, a substitute "goalie"
was appointed-which meant a
teammate (always a skater,
since there were no spare
netminders in those days),
who was only allowed to use the
penalized goalie's stick
and gloves. With the 1940 rule
change came an interesting
twist: rather than assessing
the goalie a penalty, a
penalty shot would be awarded to
the opposing team.
Until Fred C. Waghorne came along, faceoffs were very
different. Referees lined
up the centers and put the puck
between their stick blades,
and yelled "play" to signal the
start of the play.
Waghorne changed that by simply dropping
the puck.
Bobby Hull's slapshot was clocked at 119.5 mph.
His wrist shot was measured
at 105 mph and his backhand
at 96 mph.
