n a hole, in the ground, there lived a hobbit." And so begins J.R.R. Tolkien's marvelous fantasy adventure about Bilbo Baggins who is unwittingly drawn into an adventure. It is in The Hobbit, where Bilbo first meets the wizard Gandalf, encounters Gollum in the deep caves, and goes on his first adventure away from the shire. Along with 13 Dwarfs bound for The Lonely Mountain, Bilbo finds himself soon on a dangerous road from which he may not return.

Bilbo and the Dwarfs are unaware of what has happened in the valley and the fate of Smaug until a raven brings tidings to them from the south. Before the company is allowed to enjoy the knowledge that Smaug is dead and the treasure is theirs too much, the Raven informs them of the advancing armies. The elves and the men of Laketown, who blame the destruction of their town and the death of the friends on the Dwarfs, are advancing. Each group have a desire to make the treasure their own. After hearing the news, the company quickly try to fortify the entrance to the mountain, fully aware of the lights of the armies they see approaching.
