Couples of 1991
Troy Nicholls and Sheila Price
Troy was a lawyer-turned-police comissioner who fell for the lovely physical therapist Sheila Price. Alas, he was a bland man, but Sheila truly loved him and was ecstatic when he proposed marriage. That is, until Hank Gannon got in the way...

Dan Wolek and Laura Jean
Laura (Neith Hunter) was a troubled young girl who jumped into the Llantano River in an effort to kill herself, until Dan jumped in and fished her out. They soon fell in love and, in one of the most lackluster romances ever scripted, left town together.

Kerry Nicholls and Rika Price
Kerry was Troy's rapper-son, while Rika (Vanita Harbour) was Sheila's young, impressionable sister. Though they initially revolted each other, they united with Dan and Laura to outwit some tough creeps.

Andy Harrison and Hunter Guthrie
Andy and Hunter had always hated the sight of each other, but when Hunter's parents announced they were coming to town for a visit, he quickly asked her to pose as his wife, so they would not be disappointed. The brief stint showed the two how much passion they really had, however. Shortly after, in a ceremony at St. James, Andy and Hunter were married, thrilling Megan and Jake.

Megan Gordon and Jake Harrison
After a year of on-again-off-again romance, Megan and Jake took the plunge, tying the knot on their fairybook love. Jake bought Megan her "dream house," a dilapidated old building with creaky floorboards and broken windows and leaky pipes. Viki and Clint were extremely unimpressed at first, but Jake managed to fix it up himself. He and Megan were wed shortly after Andy and Hunter, in St. James. Then, following the wedding, they led family and friends out to the lawn of the church and planted a tree, saying that it "was just a little way of giving back to God a little of the happiness he's given us." Then they took off for their honeymoon in a horse-drawn carriage, Megan's veil trailing in the wind. Their happiness was short-lived, however, when Jake took an arms-trading job shortly after their return from the honeymoon. Megan begged him to stay, but Jake promised he'd be gone for only a short time. Unfortunately, Jake was waylaid in the Mid East, by General Gazi, commander of the army in Jaba City. Megan waited and worried at home, wondering where her beloved newlywed husband was.

Viki Buchanan and Roger Gordon
Viki and Roger finally agreed that they could not regain their childhood romance. Shortly after his daughter's marriage, Roger left town to work on various environmental projects.

Is Max really Asa's son?
Max was shocked to discover letters from his deceased mother that implied she had had an affair with Asa Buchanan years ago. Recalling the events that led to his parents divorce, and his father's subsequent hatred of Asa, Max confronted Asa with the letters. At first, Asa would admit nothing - but later, Max tracked down the woman who had raised him as a child; his nanny, DuAnn Demerest. DuAnn was a deceitful, bitter old woman who hated Asa with a vengeance: she told Max that Asa not only had an affair with his mother, but that he was actually Max's father!

Stunned, Max returned to Llanview and demanded the truth from Asa. The old codger admitted his affair with Max's mother, but had no idea that he could be Max's father. DuAnn had followed Max back to town and stayed close-by, serving as nanny to Cord and Tina's children, CJ and newborn Sarah. The thought that Max could be Asa's son also enticed Gabrielle, who saw eyed the Buchanan wealth jealously. She and DuAnn teamed up to prove/fake Max's parentage. When Max underwent a blood test to prove his paternity, Gabrielle (always the pro at switching things) swapped samples to ensure a match.

Max and Asa had always been enemies - Asa had bought out the Holden family ranch in a shady deal, from under his father Wingate, when Max was just a little boy. The thought that he could really be the son of Asa disgusted him. He was horrified when Gabrielle's ruse worked and he turned out to be Asa's son! But the story was far from over...

Carlo sends Gabrielle to jail and nearly kills her mother
Gabrielle was quickly slipping into dangerous waters: she was now doing Carlo Hesser's bidding. She engaged in countless illegal activities at his threats, including embezzling money from St. James' church. When Mayor Viki Buchanan began to get in the way, Carlo ordered Gabrielle to poison her drink at a party at Llanfair. Gabrielle did so; Viki nearly drank the poison, but in the end Gabrielle was caught and her schemes were revealed, shocking Max, who could no longer stand by and divorced her. Shattered, Gabrielle packed up little Al and was about to bolt town when she was stopped by Carlo, who ordered her to stay put, or else ... he made vague threats on Al's life. Gabrielle had no choice - she went to trial for her crimes and refused to finger Carlo as her accomplice. Gabrielle was sent to Statesville prison and hasn't been heard from since.

When Gabrielle's plots were revealed, Renee also happened to overhear a conversation between she and DuAnn Demerest. During a 4th of July party at the Buchanan mansion, Renee confronted DuAnn in the stables and demanded that she tell Max he wasn't Asa son. Renee and DuAnn had always been enemies; neither trusted the other. But when DuAnn told Renee she was leaving the country, Renee fought back. Moments later, DuAnn was found by Tina, dead of a bullet wound to the chest. Renee was the prime suspect.

During the following investigation, however, it was proven that the real culprit was Gabrielle's mother Julia Medina, who was also under Carlo Hesser's finger. As the authorities closed in on Julia, Carlo offered her escape to another country. But on the way to the plane that would take her to anonymity, Julia's car "coincidentally" skidded off the road. Julia was left in a coma for months, and when she recovered in early '92, she was paralyzed from the waist down and relegated to a wheelchair.

Out of all this mess, Max finally learned he was not Asa's son and they parted ways, both equally relieved. DuAnn's murder brought her lonely young daughter LeeAnn Demerest (Yasmine Bleeth) to Llanview. With scheming Gabrielle out of the picture, Max instantly took a liking to LeeAnn and they quickly became passionate. In fact, when LeeAnn became pregnant sometime later, Max would originally be considered the father. But the romance didn't last forever and when Max and LeeAnn broke up, Max decided to leave town.

Cassie and Bo, Dorian and Alex
Bo was still getting over his beloved Sarah's death when he literally bumped into an old friend at the airport. He nearly knocked over reporter Cassie Callison (now played by Laura Bonnarigo), who was returning to town to visit her mother. As Bo and Cassie began spending time together, they discovered they liked each other's company much more than they had originally realized. It grew in to love rather quickly, upsetting several important people.

Dorian was furious that her daughter had fallen for one of the Buchanan "enemy." She did her best to break the couple up, but to no avail. Also angry with the arrangement was Alex Olanov, who was still in town, longing after Bo. Alex befriended Cassie at first, quickly becoming her confidante, but slowly and carefully undermining her relationship with Bo. She even told Cassie that Bo had once had feelings for her. When Dorian and Alex realized their common goal in breaking up the happy couple, they united to do some serious damange.

Dorian came up with a brilliant plan: Alex would pretend she was pregnant with Bo's child and good, moral Cassie would have no choice but to break up with him. Alex hurriedly agreed, also hoping she'd be able to win over Bo in the process. Cassie at first bought Alex's ruse and broke up with Bo, but when he assured her it was a lie and demanded that Alex get a pregnancy test, Dorian and Alex's plan was revealed. Cassie was furious with both of them (resulting in the longest grudge she ever held against Dorian). But Alex did not cower under Cassie's wrath. Instead, she fought back. She nearly stabbed Cassie with a letter-opener. Bo and Cassie decided to leave Llanview quickly and take a vacation at the beautiful Loon Lake, high in the mountains. Alex followed them there. One day, while Bo was away from the cottage, Alex kidnapped Cassie and had her row out into the middle of the lake, where she made a bona fide effort to drown the poor girl. Cassie was rescued by Bo and Alex was hauled off in the paddy wagon, destined for the looney bin, Mountainview Clinic. Bo proposed to Cassie and she joyfully accepted. But Alex was far from out of the picture, and her greatest surprise was yet to come ...

Kevin, Stephanie, Joey and Jason
The summer of 1991 was highlighted by the arrival of Carlo Hesser's orphaned neice Stephanie Hobart (Robyn Griggs) and Wanda Wolek's motorcycle riding free-spirit nephew Jason Webb (Mark Brettschneider). Kevin Buchanan (now played by Joey Thrower) instantly took a liking to young Stephanie, though Viki and Clint pleaded with their son to stay away from her. They didn't want the family tangled up any more with Carlo Hesser than they already were. But Kevin and Stephanie were not to be kept apart, even by Jason, who also became infatuated with her. Steph's Uncle Carlo was also adamant that she stay away from Kevin, but she was so lonely that she didn't listen.

Abandoning the adult's rules, Kevin and Stephanie took the Buchanan yacht out for a cruise, unaware that young Joey (now played by Chris McKenna) had snuck aboard. When Joey learned what was going on, he came down with an asthma attack and Kevin and Stephanie had no choice but to turn back. When Carlo angrily sent Stephanie away, Megan helped her half-siblings track her down. But Stephanie was not allowed to return to Llanview and Kevin was heartbroken. That all changed, however, when he laid eyes upon the beautiful LeeAnn Demerest. Kevin lost his virginity to LeeAnn and by the end of the year, LeeAnn was pregnant with his child.

Meanwhile, Jason fell under the approving eye of Dorian Lord. Dorian seduced Jason but was never able to tame him. Jason, even while he was sleeping with Dorian, had his eye on LeeAnn as well...

Tina's deal with Hudson King
Tina devised another one of her patented, destined-to-fail plans. She was going to write a book about the trials and tribulations of the Lord/Buchanan families. Publisher Hudson King (Christopher Cousins) offered her a stunning salary for the work and Tina began spending a lot of time with him in his apartment in New York. But Hudson wasn't really Hudson - he was a con artist by the name of Cain Rogan. When Cord discovered the truth, he had a tough time convincing Tina of it. They staged a scene to smoke Hudson out. Cord would play the jealous husband and barge in on Tina and Hudson; when he saw what they were doing, he would pull out a gun in fury and fire a blank at Tina, who would then play dead. The ruse worked: Cord "shot" Tina and then threatened to kill Hudson, who hurriedly admitted he was not Hudson after all. Hudson was carted off to jail (though he was never actually sent there), while Cord had saved Tina from herself yet again.

Luna drops in to Llanview
Sheila felt she was experiencing bigotry at the hospital, so Tina decided to familarize her with the community, first by inroducing her to the Daughters of Llanview, a snooty organization of wealthy wives. During the party Tina was throwing, a figure in parachute gear came hurtling down from the sky. Shocked, Tina ran to the figure and was met by the sparkling smile and charming Southern-twang of Luna Moody (Susan Batten), a new- age Goddess worshipper.

Luna decided to stay around town awhile longer and took a job at Wanda's Place and a room at a local boarding house. Luna made quick friends with Tina, Sheila and LeeAnn and fell instantly in love with Max, who had also returned to town after a brief absence. (The role of Max was again played by James DePaiva, but the writers conveniently overlooked the miraculous change to Max's original facial appearance!) Luna told Tina she would know when she'd met the man for her, because his favorite color would be the "purple-pink color the sky makes moments before it sets over the mountains." Luna, taking a deep breath, asked Max the same question. He responded the same, word for word. But while Luna was falling for Max, his eyes were set on a new arrival in town ... the mysterious Blair Daimler (Mia Korf), who was living across the hall from Luna at the boarding house with her nutty mother Addie (Pamela Payton Wright).

Megan meets Andrew and is later diagnosed with lupus
Megan was visiting her sister Sarah's grave one autumn night when a man stepped up behind her. She turned to find a handsome, kind-looking stranger. He introduced himself as Andrew Carpenter, Reverend of St. James. Megan asked Andrew (Wortham Krimmer) if he believed people came back from the dead in the form of ghosts. Andrew thought about it, shook his head no, and added that something of a person, a memory or spirit, does survive death. Megan, instantly appreciating Andrew's wisdom, quickly became good friends with him. She was lonely in Jake's absence and found Andrew a reliable friend to lean on.

But soon after, Megan found herself becoming increasingly weak and frequently ill. At first, she ignored Viki's suggestions to see the doctor, but eventually gave in and saw Larry Wolek. Larry was the one to tell her the awful truth: she had developed a case of lupus, a sometimes crippling disease. Megan was thunderstruck: without Jake there to support her, she felt as if her world were crumbling down. Ignoring everyone's attempts to help her, Megan bolted town and ended up in Atlantic City, where she pledged that the lupus wouldn't run her life. She then proceeded to get drunk and have the time of her life in the casino. It was here she ran into a man by the name of Heinrich Kaiser (Christopher Cousins), a German filmmaker who instantly took to Megan and later followed her home to Llanview. Soon after, Tina and Heinrich met in the lobby of the Palace Hotel and the secret was out: Heinrich was really Hudson King - the publisher who tried to profit off Tina's story months ago. And not only that - but Hudson King wasn't even his real name - it was Humberto Kaldaron, and he was a Spanish businessman. (Of course, it was later revealed that his name was Cain Rogan, and he was nothing more than a cleve r con-artist). Megan felt betrayed, but as her condition continued to worsen, she could do little more than pray for Jake's safe return and spend as much time as possible with Andrew.

Bo and Cassie's wedding, Alex's "wedding gift"
Bo and Cassie were thrilled as their wedding day approached. Cassie even mustered up the courage to forgive her Dorian for her past misdeeds and even invited Dorian to the wedding. Her mother was ecstatic and for once hoped that Cassie would be happy. Unfortunately, that was not the case. At Mountainview Clinic, Alex stabbed a guard with the sharp end of a pen and made an escape. While the police searched for her, she decided to bring her own little gift to Bo and Cassie's wedding. Shortly after Bo and Cassie said "I do" at Llanfair, Alex appeared and urged Bo to go out onto the terrace, giving him her wedding gift: a music box that played Bo and Sarah's song: "Hello Paradise". In tears, Cas sie looked on as Bo stepped outside and ran face to face with Sarah (now played by Grace Phillips)- his last wife, the woman who supposedly died in a plane crash!

Cassie ran out in tears, as Dorian followed. Sarah threw her arms around Bo, unaware that he had just been married. When she realized the truth, she backed away in horror and ran off, Megan following after her.

The truth came out later: Sarah had been forced by her captors (Carlo Hesser's henchmen) to make that last frantic call to Bo. They staged a plane crash, while Sarah was held for a year at a beach house by a demented jailer. Alex knew all along she was alive and had brought her back to Llanview. Bo was torn between Cassie and his "Paradise," but decided it would be best to remain married to Cassie. Sarah was shattered, though Megan tried to cheer her up, thrilled to have her sister back. Alex, meanwhile, was carted off to Mountainview once more, her present having the desired effect.

Doug and Jane Ebert
Jane Ebert was one of Luna's fellow waitresses at Wanda's Place. Jane and Luna became friends quickly (as Luna didn't have many friends yet), but she began to worry when Jane started appearing for work late, sometimes with ugly bruises on her wrists or neck. Luna discussed the situation with Tina and both began to wonder if Jane wasn't being abused by her husband. Upon first meeting Doug Ebert, it became clear that it was a definite possibility. Doug was a violent, short-tempered man that frightened most people he came in contact with. Luna desperately urged Jane to get out of the marriage, but Jane insisted that Doug would never seriously hurt her. Viki and Megan also tried to convince Jane to get help.

In a fit of rage, Doug kidnapped both Viki and Megan and held them prisoner in the cellar, tied to each other. The damp chill of the basement aggravated Megan's lupus and she quickly became ill. Viki pleaded with Doug to let her daughter go, but Doug only cackled and left. Somehow, the duo managed to untie the ropes that bound them and made their escape. Jane, finally convinced that Doug was a violent man, called the police on him. When he learned of her "betrayal," Doug nearly killed his wife, but the police arrived too soon, lucky for Jane. Megan was quickly hospitalized as she suffered a major relapse.

Cord and Blair's rescue mission; Cord's "death"
As Megan grew sicker, Cord decided to go to Jaba City and free Jake. He was accompanied by mysterious newcomer and Banner reporter Blair Daimler (Mia Korf). Though Tina begged him not to go, certain something terrible would happen, Cord assured her he'd be fine and headed to the MidEast with Blair. Once there, the two posed as doctors. The night before their rescue mission, with the Jaba heat pounding down on them, Cord and Blair nearly gave into temptation (Blair wanted it, but Cord pulled back, refusing to cheat on Tina.) The next day, they were led into the room where Jake was being held hostage and led him outside to the docks. But their ruse then failed when they were stopped by the evil General Gazi. He ordered Jake to be returned to his cell and then raised his gun, firing at Cord.

Cord was shot in the chest and fell backwards over a railing and into the Jaba River. Blair dove in after him, screaming his name. Alas, she was unable to find him and was forced to make a quick getaway from Jaba City. Back in Llanview, she told the Buchanan's the awful truth about Cord. From that moment on, Blair and Tina were mortal enemies.
