    Dr. Hing Kan - B.Eng(Hon), PhD, RMIT, SMIEEE

Biography

Hing Kan was born in the Garden Island of Fiji called Taveuni. He received his B. Eng (Hons) in Communication Engineering and PhD degree at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in 1999 and 2002 respectively. Dr. Kan received the Departmental Scholarship (2000 - 2001), the Academic Excellence Scholarship (2001) and the IEEE Travel Award from the MTT/AP Society of the IEEE Victorian Section (2001). He joined Temasek Laboratories, National University of Singapore in Dec. 2001 where he performed research on electrically small antennas as a Research Scientist and Project Leader. In Nov. 2002, he returned home and joined the Department of Engineering as a Senior Lecturer until August 2007. During his tenure in Fiji, he has been an Assistant to the Head of School from 2004 - 2005. He has been instrumental in negotiating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is the Fiji counterpart for the planned Japan-Pacific ICT Center of Excellence to be built at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala Campus. He was also appointed as a Chief Examiner with the Ministry of Education in Fiji from 2005 - 2006. In this role, he prepared and finalized the national exam, namely, the Fiji School Leaving Certificate and Fiji Seventh Form examination in Computer Studies. During Feb - May 2006, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Queensland in Australia for his sabbatical with Professor Marek Bialkowski. In July, 2006, he was appointed the Research Group Leader for the Faculty Communication and Networking Research Group. He is now embarking into Industry as an Antenna Research and Design Engineer from August, 2007, in Melbourne, Australia. In August 2008, he was elevated to Senior Member of IEEE.
