Bio

Hilary Tham. Click to see  larger copy.Hilary Tham, of Arlington, VA., is an artist and author of nine books of poetry, including MEN & Other Strange Myths. Her second book, Bad Names for Women, won second prize in the Virginia Poetry Prizes (Judge: Gerald Stern) and third prize in the Paterson Prize for Poetry (judge: Diane Wakoski). Her memoir on the making of a writer: Lane With No Name, Memoirs and Poems of a Malaysian-Chinese Girlhood was published in 1997. Her work has appeared in such publications as Antietam Review, International Quarterly and in college texts. She has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She holds a B.A. in English literature from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. Winner of ten Artist-in-Education grants and a poetry fellowship from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, she teaches creative writing in schools and for the Writer's Center. Since 1994, she has been editor-in-chief for the Word Works and poetry editor for Potomac Review. Her poems have been translated into Hebrew in Israel and Chinese in Taiwan. Her most recent books are Counting: a long poem (Word Works, 2000, Reality Check & Other Travel Poems & Art in 2001 and The Tao of Mrs. Wei in 2003. Her art has been exhibited at Arlington's Barnes & Noble, the World Bank and the Arlington-Fairfax Jewish Congregation. Her website is at http://www.oocities.org/hilarytham.
