It is the mission of the San Andres Elementary School Library Media Program to collaborate with staff on curriculum and support student achievement by providing appropriate materials, means, resources, and instruction to enable both students and staff to become effective, competent, independent users of information and current technology.  The goal of the library is to create lifelong learners by instilling the love reading for both pleasure and information seeking through guidance and exposure to quality literature.

San Andres Elementary utilizes the Accelerated Reader program developed by Renaissance Learning.  Through this program, books are assigned grade equivalent reading levels and point values. Students are given a reading vocabulary test that determines their reading level and comfort zone for independent reading.  Individual goals are set for students every six weeks.  They then read books independently and as a class and take reading comprehension tests over the material that they have read.  Students earn points based on their performance on the computer administered tests.  These points can be redeemed in the San Andres AR Store.
We believe that the Accelerated Reader program encourages students to read and learn.  Their participation in the Accelerated Reader program accounts for 21% of their reading grade, 7% from test averages, 7% from the percentage of their goal that was earned, and 7% from the points that were earned during the grading period.
