Yugi n Yami Shrine

Welcome to my exclusive Yugi n Yami Shrine! Yugi and Yami are the two most important characters in Yu-Gi-Oh (they are also my favorite charaters ^_^). Their bond with each other is something that makes the show unique and touching. This is a shrine dedicated to the both of them, to honor their bond and their special relationship with each other.

NOTE: I am not really a yaoi fan. I only think of Yugi and Yami as really close friends.

So you may wonder, how did Yugi first complete his Milliennium Puzzle? Well, below is a interesting little bit of history on the origin of Yugi and his Millennium Puzzle. It also contains the origin of Yugi and Joey's friendship. What I wrote is mainly based on what the Manga says, since the anime gives very little information on this topic. So please enjoy...

Yugi was just a regular high schooler at Domino High School when one day his life changed forever. Curiosity has gotten the better of Yugi when he found a golden box carved with Egyptian symbols on his grandfather's game shop shelf. Inside the box contains various puzzle pieces for which Yugi decides to keep for himself to solve. Yugi worked hard over the next eight years, trying to piece together the puzzle. He knew the puzzle was special the first moment he touches it and he thought the writings on the box meant that whoever solves the puzzle will be granted one wish. Lonely and desparate for someone that he can talk to, Yugi decides his one wish will be for a true friend...

The wish motivated Yugi even more. He worked day and night, often forgetting to sleep, to solve the puzzle. But he always seems to be stuck at one spot. One day at school, while he was again trying hard to piece together the puzzle, Joey and Tristan runs in and decides plays "keep away" with Yugi using it. Joey back then was a bully, picking on the weak for his own enjoyment. Thankfully Tea walks in right that minute and got Joey and Tristan to leave.

However, Joey managed to grab one puzzle piece. He throws that piece into the school swiming pool and thinks to himself that Yugi will never able to solve the puzzle now.

"You will never know where you will find your best friend"

Days later, Yugi was on his way back home when he was stopped by the school hall monitor. He asks whether Yugi need to use a body guard to protect himself from getting picked on by bullies. Yugi quickly says a no thanks and walks away.

Later, Yugi was asked by the same hall monitor to go to a place with him. Once there, Yugi found that both Joey and Tristan got beaten up bad. Angered, Yugi steps infront of them, telling the hall monitor to stop, that they are his friend. Strifing a laugh, the hall monitor ignores Yugi's wishes and beats him up instead. Seeing how Yugi is willing to get beaten up so they wouldn't get hurt, Joey finally realizes the true meaning of friendship...

That night, Joey retrieves the puzzle piece that he took from the bottom of the pool. Yugi was able to finally complete the puzzle because of that one piece. From then on, Joey and Yugi, and then later Tristan became best of friends. Joey asks Yugi, " What is something that can be felt and can't be seen?" "What is it Joey?" "It is friendship!" Yugi's wish of getting a true friend was finally granted. But what he didn't realize is that Joey would not be his only true friend, as he gradually bonded with the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle.

While Yugi and Joey's friendship is very special, the bond between Yugi and Yami is even more special. To Yami, Yugi wasn't just a plain friend and a mere host to him, Yugi is his companion, his conscience, and his hikari (light). He cares for and loves Yugi deeply, like a younger brother, someone he is determined to protect at all cost. Of course, the bond between Yugi and Yami wasn't built over night, as it grows from an unforgettable experience...

After defeating the Paradox brothers, Yugi and gang were finally out of that murky underground labyrinth, only to be confronted by Seto Kaiba. Kaiba tells Yugi that he can duel with passion now, enabling to him to put his heart into his cards. Unable to turn down the Heart of the Card Philosophy, Yugi agrees...

"Look closely, for this is the creature that will strip
you of everything you have once
and for all." ~ Kaiba

The two rivals stands on top of Pegasus castle, poised to duel. Both played skillfully and each of their life points quickly drops below 1000. Kaiba finally brings out his triumph card, the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, an monster with ultimate attack points. Faced with such a powerful monster, Yugi has to think quickly. So he protected his life points with Kuriboh and the magic of multiply. As the dragon destorys half of the Kuribohs, more came to take their place. Next Yugi combines the Living Arrow with Mammoth Graveyard and shoots it into the heart of the dragon, causing the dragon to rot and decrease in attack points by 1200 every turn.

Kaiba, with no other choice left, determines to save his brother by threatening to jump of the castle if Yugi attacks the weakened dragon's head with Celtic Guardian. The little Yugi says he can't attack for it might cost Kaiba's life, but Yami determines to won the duel. As Yami calls out the attack, Yugi finally takes over his body and calls out "STOP!". Shaken with the fact that he almost lost control of himself, Yugi swears that he will never duel again...

But as fate shall have it, Mai came just in time with five extra star chips to repay Yugi. Yugi, however, has no intention of taking the chips. Frustrated, Mai challenges Yugi to a duel, only to be accepted by Tea. Tea wons the star chips in the end by trusting in friendship. Thanking Tea for the chips, Yugi decides that he must duel again, for his grandfather's sake.

The first duel between the semi-finalist happens to be Mai and Yugi. But Yugi couldn't concentrate, since he half focuses on the duel and half focuses on keeping Yami in control. Mai, realizing something is amiss with Yugi, tells him to face his fear head on. Yugi finally confronts Yami and Yami promises to never go against Yugi's wishes again. Working together, Yami and Yugi was able to defeat Mai's Harpy's Pet Dragon, thus gaining winning the duel. What is more importnat, however, is the begining of the trust and friendship between Yugi and Yami.

Below are more memorable Yugi and Yami moments from the anime...

"Yugi!...no, I can no longer feel
the presence of his young mind..."

During Yugi and Pegasus's Final Duel of Souls (Yugi and Pegasus: Match of the Millennium), Pegasus drags Yugi into the Shadow Realm for the second time when he couldn't defeat Yugi and Yami's mind Shuffle any other way. Pegasus hopes that strain of maintaining monsters will eventually overwhelm Yugi, causing him to collapase. Yami took over for Yugi for a while, but Yugi is determined to maintain the mind shuffle for that is the only thing that is keeping them at narrow lead in life points. But the strain of the shadow realm is too strong and Yugi collapase after he places a card face down and a monster in the field.

Yami could no longer feel Yugi's presence, his young soul that usually nestles besides his. Angered, Yami is determined to not let Yugi's final effort of courage down by defeating Pegasus once and for all. With the help of Yugi's friends preventing Pegasus from reading his mind, Yami was able to use Kuriboh's multiply effect and the Magician of Chao's powerful attack to defeat Pegasus. Yugi was deeply thankful to all his friends, and to Yami especially. They high fives each other at the end, thus began a bond between each other that would last eternality.

Bandit Keith, who was under Marik's control, steals the Puzzle away from Yugi. Yugi risked his life chasing down Keith and then duels him by himself in order to get the Puzzle back. When Bakura later arrives, he frees Keith from Marik's mind control. Marik realizes that he will not win the Puzzle, so he controls Keith one last time to smash Yugi's Puzzle. Afterwards, Keith still hears Marik's voice and determines to find Marik by trashing the warehouse, unknowingly sets a fire. Yugi determines to save Yami by piecing the puzzle back together again. He did it, but he faints due to the smoke. Joey and Tristan later saved Yugi's life by carrying him out before the warehouse collapses. I think this episode shows that Yugi's willingness to save Yami even if it could cost his own life.
