Cheeko's Comics: The Story

In the beginning, hundreds of thousands of millions of billions of trillions of eons ago...

There was nothing. But somewhere in the Darkness of Nothing there dwelt the Essence of a Spirit of infinite power. And this Essence was lonely. And so the Essence stretched forth his hands in the Darkness and created Life: all the crawling beasts of the earth and the birds and creatures of the air, the waters of the oceans and the plants of the ground, and the complexity of it was so great that the Essence was both pleased and overwhelmed. So, to help keep order in this new Life, the Essence created his Children and His Subjects, the Gods, who are today known as "The Old Ones." These five individuals he named "The Guardians," and each were given a kingdom and/or element they had to watch over and protect. And so, time passed. The earth changed and grew and molded and changed even more, and mortals, elves and cats and humans and mermen and dragons, came into being, and with the birth of these creatures, so too was born Worship and Religion. But instead of worshiping the One Essence that had Created Life from the Darkness, these creatures worshiped his subjects, the Old Ones. Gods and Mortals have a unique relation to one another: mortals depend on the gods to protect and provide for them, while the gods depend on mortals to worship them, grant them their faith, and increase their power. Thus, both depend upon the other for survival: the more worshipers a god collects, the stronger he or she becomes, while those whose worshipers dwindle or weaken lose power themselves. Therefore, as He watched His children grow stronger and stronger and more numerous in number as they had their own children with the passing of the years, the One Essence itself slowly began to fade. The Greatest Being felt the Fading, and made a very difficult and very hard decision: in order to ensure His own survival, the Essence would have to depart from his creations... but only after he stretched out his hand to Create one last time. The Essence wished to leave a gift, a token to help those he had created remember how they came to be, as well as offer help to those who truly needed it.

So was born Crysthel, the Crystal Dragon of All Knowledge, the Last of the Old Ones and the most beloved of the Essence's Children. To this creature the Creator granted Universal Knowledge and Immeasurable Wisdom, as well as the combined strength and beauty of all He had Created. His final task done, the Creator retreated, back into the Darkness, to fall into a slumber that would last until the End of Times. Crysthel, now alone, was left to wander her new world, and began to spread her wisdom and aid. But the gods, instead of treating this creature with respect and awe, became jealous and afraid...

Besides being envious of her power, besides mingling with mere mortals, this creature answered any question, to any creature, and as many questions as they wished! The gods knew the foolishness of mortals. How long until one asked how to kill a god? Or how to become one themselves? Something had to be done. Something was done. And so all the gods came together and created an artifact of unspeakable, ancient power. And within this circlet... they trapped Crysthel, but in doing so, they enchanted it in such a way that her Knowledge would not be lost... For whoever wore the band, either god or mortal, they would be transported to Her prison to be granted her Knowledge and Wisdom. But to protect their own authority, the gods created for Crysthel but one law: Each creature was granted ONE QUESTION, and ONE QUESTION only. And so Cines Crysthel entered the world, and its great power remained a secret only to the gods until the first question was asked hundreds of years later. It has been passed from owner to owner, sought by the few treasure-hunters who had somehow gained knowledge of its capabilities, and has traveled from one end of the earth to the other, and back again. Even so, the memory of Crysthel and her Creator faded completely from the minds of all, so that her original purpose, to help remind those of where they had really come from, was never fulfilled. But still, Crysthel exists and waits somewhere out there in the world... waiting until perhaps you yourself lay your hands upon her Circlet... and even then, all she will ask you is: What is your Question?

...And now, here in the bustling city of Silverport, a strange-looking young thief will find himself asking that very question.
