What is a herpetological Society?

Well, we can't say for sure that there has ever been a definition for what a Herp Society is, therefore, we will try to explain it in terms easily understood.

A Herpetological Society is a non profit organization of people who love reptiles and amphibians . We meet fortnightly to discuss ways and projects to educate the public on herps, how we can contribute to protecting and saving local herps and how we can help to legalize herps in Singapore. We also try to bring in some of the experts in the field of Herpetology to speak with us about these magnificent animals. Finally, we also enjoy field trips into the woods and zoos to try to learn as much as we can about reptiles and amphibians.

Our Beliefs: With the belief that all Herpefauna throughout the world, including reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods, are invaluable for human survival, the HSS is committed to accentuating their importance by:

  1. Educating and Improving the public image of reptiles and amphibians.
  2. Contribute to conservation in Singapore to protect and save what's left of our natural herps in the wild.
  3. Fully endorsing the practice of captive breeding as to provide for the survival of the species in nature.
  4. Providing our members with information and knowledge, to enable them to be responsible pet owners in our society.
  5. Assisting as much as we can, the scientific studies of herpefauna throughout the world so that we too can understand these creatures to their fullest.
  6. Providing an outlet for pet owners in the area with a group that they can feel comfortable with.
  7. Educate the young to appreciate the wonder and beauty of all natural life, especially reptiles and amphibians so that our world will continue to have herpetologists and amateurs who will study and care for our worlds reptiles and amphibians.

We have three goals:

EDUCATION-- As an organization, we want to first and foremost educate ourselves and the public. As we speak there is another animal being placed on the endangered list somewhere. Through education, we can inform the public of this and attempt to stop, or at least aid in stopping, this from happening. We want to get this message out and at the same time teach by example. We will visit schools, day care centers, scout troops and do public shows in Malls and shopping centers. In short, we will do anything we can to get the message out to the public.

CONSERVATION-- We will do our best to explain why these animals are important and what needs to be done to prevent the further destruction of their habitats. We will do out best to conserve whatever herps that are left in Singapore so that our future generations can appreciate them. There is a widely held view by the public that we can live without reptiles or that they are only good for "boots and belts". As creatures of this Earth, they have as much right to be here as we do. They are incredibly evolved species adapted to succeed in their normal habitat. It is man alone who can decide the future of these animals. We must decide to do the right thing and make their world as stable as possible.

RESCUE-- We shall endeavor to help any and all reptiles that are in need of our assistance. We will, as a society, take in any "homeless" reptile as well as sick and abused animals. We feel that our years of experience in caring for these animals allows us a great opportunity to help these animals in a way that most Humane Societies cannot. We will also have an adoption program set up to place them in caring homes once herps are legalize in Singapore.
