"Something
funny is going on here. Yesterday the Top Doctor for the VA called
me at home. He was very, very nervous for a long time on the phone.
Freaked out when I mention the 1942 test. Went totally silent for
a long while. (got ya!) This man stayed on the phone with me
for as long as I wanted, well over an hour. We both know a man of
this level is not just hanging around with nothing to do. I am on
to them and they know it now. The Doctor had me on a speakerphone.
… I am going to nail them! This is like a chess game. Or better,
hunting stupid fish in a barrel! They are motivated by ego and greed.
I am just motivated because my life depends on it, and the lives of honorable
veterans and war heroes are depending on me to speak on their behalf.
Who has the more sincere motivation? ...
The Doctor
did throw me a bone and try to shut me up by giving me the key phrases
that are needed to collect from the VBA. VA takes care of Medical
care. VBA pays disability, pension and compensation.
I did not know this! How can I be in for these many years and be
a good troop (sic) and not know this? Remember my career has been
a little of this, and a little of that. Officer, enlisted, active,
reserves, stateside, overseas, etc... Why do I not know about the VBA.
I will write Col Connolly a note with the "Key" phrases needed to be included
on the VA paperwork. I will also tell him about my conversation with
Dr. Roselle from the VA HQ in Cincinnati.
Veterans
are left in the cold searching for help and the top guy has nothing better
to do than to chew the fat with me on the phone ...
Yesterday
the Doctor began to complain that this was a problem (my theory) for him.
I told him that I was sorry if I was ruining his Friday morning, but he
had ruined my life and the lives' of all my friends. ...
At one
point he was ready to hang up and I said, "fine! Go ahead, hang up!
I will write again to the President, Senators, and Congressman (sic) naming
his name as someone that will not give me information and is bullying me
and many veterans! Reminded him that election day was only seven
months away! ...
His attitude
totally changed after the election day remark. Must of been something
I said. ...
I am speaking
for other sick veterans and not for my myself when I talk to these politicians
at the VA, CDC, FDA, Harvard, etc. They are starting to piss me off!
My writing gets better the angrier I am. Careful politicians!
Kevin has been a gentleman so far. Soon he will take the gloves off!"

the VA. That should bring me into the fall. I have no energy
left. I have been running on empty for months but figured 'hey,
what the heck?' Now I must gear down, I have no choice.
My disease
has progressed. My hands are almost useless and my belly has begun
to retain fluids. I look 3-4 months pregnant some days. It
is like a watermelon, and hurts sometimes. It has become very hard
to type accurately. So I must rest and gear down for the summer.
The girls graduate in 6 weeks and I will not be able to go. Hurts
to wear shoes with swollen feet. Other than that things are fine.
Of course the tremors and two pappaloma tumors on the right side of my
mouth, that have emerged in the last three weeks, and on the side of my
face have got me a little down, But hey! A little rapid cellular
division never hurt anyone, right? I am sure they are benign. All
the other ones are!
Let me
see, also, the kids have stayed away from me for months and my wife has
admitted that she can no longer watch the wasting of my body and has to
avoid me. Of course I still have my yard - but I have not spent a
minute in it yet. I do have my mind but that has begun to falter.
Well, just another day here ... talk to you later, Kevin

My heart is not into it yet, maybe during the warmer days it will be different.
I cannot get sun. HCV makes your skin photosensitive.
Nothing
on the book yet. Honestly it makes no difference to me. I enjoyed
writing and many enjoyed learning worldwide. It was a moment that
I could not recreate if I wanted to. I learn to enjoy what I have
now. The book is a could be.
My family
is reacting the way any normal person would act. Remember I have
been on the other side of the coin with Joanie! I understand what they
are going through. I feel back for them and you. There is nothing
I can do except assure you all that I am comfortable with what is happening
to me. I cannot stand to watch what it is doing to those around me,
yourself and Andre. My (stepchildren) are young and will learn later
in life what has happened to me. They have their world and that is
very important to them. Remember being 17 or 18?
Tina I
have been concerned about from day one! I pinned her down for avoiding
me. I recognized the behavior, I use to do it with Joanie.
No one is comfortable with death. No one wants to deal with it on
a daily basis at home. If any one was to be sick in this house, I
would, of course, want it to be me. I have the least to lose.
They have
the most to gain out of life. Tina will be a grandmother soon (10
years) and that will consume her life. I encourage her to hang with
the (stepchildren), that is her future. I do not want to die and
have them all angry at each other because their mom left them emotionally
when they needed her most. They will need each other's strength to
move on. My job here is done, God has told me as much. I have
no choice. I am happy with my life and am not so angry any more at
being cut down in my prime.
I do struggle
with the fact that I am not even 40 yet. If I was 40 and diagnosed then
I could say "well at least I had 40 good years."
I have
been sick for 21 years ... I felt robbed at first, but am a lot wiser now.
We are all robbed only if we think we are entitled to something.
We are entitled to nothing on this planet. All that we have is a
blessing. Because of this view, each day is fun for me, even though
I physically feel bad and sometimes hurt.
I speak
the truth went (sic) I say that I am comfortable with this. I am
not comfortable with what's happening to others. Tina has not moved
away emotionally. She is my best friend and I can speak to her about
anything, including what is happening to me. She is my wife, of course
it hurts her to watch this. She can do nothing. How helpless do you
think she feels in all of this? No one understands too much about this
in the world, except her husband. He has told her what is to come,
she is starting to have to come to grips with reality. It is human
natured to avoid harm. I am not hurt by it, only lonely sometimes.
But I stay busy. I am happy!

Any other vets need help?
Dear Pam:
I believe I can assist Carlo G. in a few important areas. I've spoken
with him about compensation an a VHA home loan. I have also sent
him the relevant information for him to follow up on. He seems like a very
loyal hard working family man. I truly enjoy helping people like
him. If you have any more vets that need help, please give them my
E-mail address. I do not care what service or what type of discharge
they have. If they have served our country I would like to help them, if
possible. Much of the information I have pertains to many veterans,
not just vets with Hepatitis C.
I do not
know if there are any others that I can help, but please, Pam, feel free
to offer my services to any veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. I can
also introduce veterans, over the computer that have similar situations
or service times and areas together. I have a couple of guys that
served in Da Nang, like Carlo did.
I offer
this service to you, Pam, and to the Congressman if needed because I have
found you to be very responsive and sensitive to veteran's needs.
This makes me proud to be an American. Keep up the great work!
Tomorrow
a national media organization is going to speak with me about my situation

As you
can see Pam, my family is the kind that society needs. I do not know
what to tell them. How do I say I will die? From what?
I can offer their help to you, and I can help hundreds of veterans freely
and willingly myself, but I need your help. I do not know how
or where to start, but I must be able to explain to my family why this
has happened to me at 39 years old.
I am still
a Captain in the Army Reserve and was to be up for Major this summer.
I have spent almost 23 years dedicated to this nation and the people of
my community. How can I explain to everyone that soon I will not
be able to help any longer? Soon I will be forced to send my medical
documentation of my illness to St. Louis and they will determine if I am
sick. If so then I am forced to retire. If not, I lose everything
and must start from scratch with the VA like Carlo had to. I fear
that I will be forced to low crawl up the steps of the VA for my benefits.
I will help many but I need your help. What can we do?

Well, well,
I have
returned from my big day! It started with the reporter's husband

Anyway,
then the VA wrote to say that they are not responsible for veterans being
mistreated and that I would have to ask the maker of Adenoviruses if they
are safe. Of course they did not disclose the manufacturer.
Then it
was up to village hall to get all the purported papers involving my neighbor's
in-the-ground pool. From there it was on to the Emergency Room to
visit all my health care worker friends.
We saw
Tina. And some of her nice nurse friends. I even met a few
Doctors and lab workers. :-) The x-ray guy was real nice as
he zapped my lungs and belly. Then it was time to start the IV and
also blood work time! 5 more tubes! Whew! At least this time
I did not cry. ;-( I had the nice Doctor examine my belly and
then it was off to the CAT Scan room for view of my swollen belly.
The good
news is that today my kidneys are fine. So is my pancreas and heart.
Other than that it is not good news. My spleen is enlarged and so
is my liver. In fact my liver is so large that is (sic) has basically
doubled in size in the last 4-5 months. It has begun to press on
all the other organs and has started to push them out out (sic) the way.

Dear sympathetic

I am on

I think it is near the end for him. He has been struggling for a
week now with increasing difficulty each evening. I will only take
him to the vet if he is suffering and needs to die. I believe this
is his home and he should die here, if possible. He will be buried
with Scott near the Gazebo in the back yard.
I bought
Scott and Sammy a week after Joanie and I were married in 1986. She
did not like or want Sammy and she use to kick him and hit him with her
cane. He became skittish because of that. She wanted him gone.
I brought him to be put down and bought Dusty to bring back to her. The
next morning I said, 'screw this,' and went and got Sammy back. He
has been with me ever since. He was just 7 weeks old when I first
got him. He has been an indifferent cat that will not sit on anyone's lap,
even mine. Still he is my boy and when he goes so goes another part
of that bad time in my life. I suppose now this is worse - HCV.
Scott (13)
went last year. That will still leave Dusty (11) and Muffin (5).
All have been boys. Tina brought Muffin home from the ER one night.
I never wanted cats ... Honestly! I have been cursed with feline

those I may have influence with. Only Congress can give you the large
sums of money you will be needing to assist millions. I must move
quickly before election day in order to get them all on record! I
will use the media to help me. I spoke with Jamie Talan of Newsday
today and she told me you and her spoke at length (2 hours - I'm jealous,
I only got over an our) :-)
Please
let me know how I can you help millions of others. I believe the
ball is rolling now and I would like to practice Issac Newton's first Law!
Let's keep it rolling!
Sincerely,
Kevin Donnelly"
