Hemantha Kodikara Arachchi

BSc (Eng) (Moratuwa), MPhil (Moratuwa), DEng (AIT), MIEEE, MIET

Who am I?

I am a Research Fellow in the I-Lab Multimedia and DSP Research Group of the University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, UK. Currently, I work for the VISNET II NoE research team at Surrey. Before joining the I-Lab, I was with the Brunel University, Uxbridge, UK, as a Research Fellow.

Being a Sri Lankan, most of my formal education was obtained in Sri Lanka. Just because I was lazy to memorize things, I decided to follow more mathematic oriented subject stream and therefore, I joined the University of Moratuwa, which is one of the leading technological universities in Sri Lanka, to follow an engineering degree course in 1993. I graduated with an honours in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering in 1997. Since I have been 'obsessed' with research, I joined the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, within no time after the graduation. First, I have been a researcher for the department for about three months and subsequently, became a lecturer. While serving as a lecturer, I also enrolled in a masters degree program (by research) in 1998 at the same department. After completing the masters degree in 2000, I joined the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand to continue studies towards my doctoral degree in Telecommunication Engineering. I obtained my doctoral degree in 2004.

My primary education was completed at (then) the Royal Primary School, Telijjawila (present Telijjawila Royal College) and the secondary education was obtained at the Central College, Telijjawila. I ended my formal school education after taking the advanced level examination in 1990.

I have a cute little son and his name is Kavin. My wife, Themali, and I really enjoy his company and as expected, most of our leisure time spends with him.

A Concise Biography

Hemantha Kodikara Arachchi is a research fellow at the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK. He is a member of the I-Lab Multimedia and DSP Research Group, a part of the Centre for Communication Systems Research at the University of Surrey. He received his B.Sc. (Eng.) (Hons.) in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 1997. In 2000, he received M.Phil. degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering. He was awarded doctoral degree in Telecommunications in 2004 by Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand.

He joined Imaging Research Group of Computer Science Department, Loughborough University in 2003 as an Academic Visitor. Just after completing his doctorate in 2004, he joined the Video Coding Research group of School of Engineering of Design, Brunel University, as a research fellow. Upon completion of his EPSRC funded research project in Brunel University in 2006, he was offered research fellowship by the University of Surrey to extend his research activities under the VISNET II Network of Excellence (NoE) project, which is funded under the European Union’s Information Science and Technology (IST) program.

He is specialised in video coding and adaptation technologies. His current research activities mainly focused on multimedia adaptation. He has long term experience with 2D and 3D video coding and their applications. He has published over 30 journal and international conference publication on these areas. He has served as peer reviewer to a number of journals including the IEEE Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and Journal of Optical Engineering, and many international conferences including Picture Coding Symposium.
