One of the most interesting aspects of the Diablo II Battle Net Chat room, is the strange gem that occupies the center. When pressed it changes from blue to purple and gives the message "Gem Activated", "Gem deactivated"  this section at the moment does not have a 100% answer and probably never will it just explores all the rumors and ideas I have read on other sites or have 'heard' in the Battle net Diablo II Chat rooms. Another interesting thing about the gem, is if you press it a seemingly random amount of times you get the "perfect gem activated" message, although again unknown if it serves any purpose.

The First rumor I heard about it was that it  increased the chance to find gem shrines, the obvious link between the fact its a gem and the rare shrine seemed a reasonably sound idea, but why would Blizzard do something like that

surely the gem would have a different purpose then this?

I doubt this is the real function of the B.Net Gem

Another Gem related idea was that pressing it a certain amount of time before entering a game would upgrade your gems, this seems very unlikely as lots of people, many from when Diablo II was first opened

for general play will have pressed that gem so many times

This out of the ideas is what I consider the most likely, the gem has no function at all and is there to spread rumors

you can already see why I think this could be true, I mean I have created a page about the gem

and if that's not spreading rumors I don't know what is
