"That could never happen to me." Isn't that what we all think when we see someone poor? Someone homeless? Someone begging on the street? Must be because they're lazy. Or stupid. Definately their own fault though, right?

How many times I said those things, heard people like me say those things. Wondering what happened to push them across that line. Now I am on the other side of that line.

Three years ago I was living the Americam Dream. Good job, new house, plenty of money. Then everything fell apart. First 9/11. Then the stock market crashed. All my 401k savings were gone overnight. Now I have been laid off from my job. I have been out of work for months. My credit is ruined, my truck has been repossesed. I am two months behind on my mortgage and taxes and if I can't raise $3000 to bring the mortgage up to date by August 5th, my family might end up homeless.

Now don't get me wrong. I am not saying I am without blame for my situation. I accept the blame, as we all should, and accept the consequences. All I want now is to pay back whatever I can to the people I owe, and to keep my family in our home.

I have always tried to be a good man, a good father, a good provider. Honest, dependable, and respectful. When things were better for me, I was always generous. Whether at church, helping in the community, or just discretely slipping someone a few dollars to help make their life a little better, I always try to make the world a brighter place. Even if only for a little while.

All I can offer in return are these 3 promises.

I promise to write back and thank you personally.
I promise to remember you in my prayers.
I promise to, in some way, pass on to others the kindness you have shown me.
