My movies of the Month
My friends think i'm a bit of a freak when it comes to giving my opinions on films.  I will sometimes go into details like the acting and the camera angles etc. or sometimes i'll just say a few words about the fillm and thats it and sometimes i'll go on for hours about a film, even days on occasions.  Although for the purposes of this site i have kept them quite short but with some important details, in my view.  I don't like to rate films, i find it difficult, also just because i think a films good doesn't mean you will.  The films i watch are often horror movies but i also watch many other genre's of film, i have a particular interest in forgien films.  When i watch a film i don't sit through the film analysing it, this may seem strange but it's true.  I'll try and explain this better, the thing is i like to watch movies, i like to just watch them, get caught up in the story and everything, i don't want to sit and analyse them as i'm watching them it ruins the films for me when i do this.  For example i started reading this book about film studies and they had this little bit about the beginning of the film 'Halloween':
'...lengthy steadicam shot from behind a mask where the 'camera' searches through a house and discovers and kills 2 lovers, the mask is removed revealing a small boy.  The camera cranes back and upwards stressing both the vulnerability of the child and the judgement of the local community.' (taken from 'An introduction to film studies-edited by Jill Nelmes).
Now i'm sure all this is true but if i started thinking this everytime i watched a film i'd never enjoy it or fully appreciate it.  I hope some of you understood that.  I have a whole page dedicated to the movie 'halloween' with lotsa pics and facts just go back to the home page and follow the directions to it.
I try and change the reviews every month, i'll only review films i think are good, unless all i've seen is bad movies in which case i'll have to review them.  Anyways here is my views on two movies i saw over the last few weeks, note that these movies are to my taste, just because i like them doesn't mean you will, but i hope you do, cos their good movies in my book, for one perverted reason or another.
Woo-hoo!  An update (for real) finally!  K well i haven't been to the cinema much in the past few months, the last thing i saw was the third Lord of the Rings, which was fantosstic (although the ending dragged abit too much for me personally).  Anyways i have however recently raided and scoured my local Blockbuster and bought a nice selection to DVDs (praise the lord for computer fairs where you can get a DVD player dirt cheap).  So an gonna go through a few of my recent purchases instead for abit of variety :)
K first film is The Hot Chick which was released 2002 and is written by Rob Schneider (who also stars in it) and Tom Brady (who directs it).  It also stars Anna Faris (a new potential obsession of mine) and Eric Christian Olsen (Dumb and Dumberer).  Basically Jessica is the most popular girl in school and one morning wakes up in the body of a 30 year old man.  So the quest is on for her to work out how this happened and how to change back, while trying to deal with all the usual teen problems i.e. prom.  This is pretty much a no brainer chick flick but it's great i absolutely love it, good storyline, great acting by Schneider and the yummy female cast, absolute must go raid Blockbuster!!
Dark Water (2002) comes from the writer of the Ring, Koji Suzuki, director (of the original japanese Ring film) Hideo Nakata and stars Hitomi Kuroki (who stared in Ring:the final chapter).  After her divorce Yoshimi Matsubara (Hitomi Kuroki) moves into a run down apartment complex with her 5 year old daughter.  Soon after moving in they notice that water had started to leak through the ceiling of the mothers bedroom and a strange red bag keeps reappearing in their apartment.  This isn't a bad horror film, personally i didn't find it that scary, but it was certainly enjoyable to watch.  Its wonderfully directed, great mood, suspense and the story is told well, but i just feel it's lacking something.
Nemesis Game (2003) written and directed by Jesse Warn and it had Ian McShane in it (Lovejoy, for those of us old enough to remember it)!  Basic storyline about riddles and an underground game to discover what the design and meaning of life is.  All very confusing really but rather good and thought provoking.
Being a poor straving student i don't really have the money to go the cinema alot, rent the new release or buy films. But thanks to various high street stores and their capitalist greed i can afford to buy the odd video now and then in the sales. When i do have money i will go the cinema and in Birmingham there is this really groovy old cinema called 'The Electric Cinema', it's an independent one so it shows old, forgien and those forgotten movies that wizzed through the box office without you noticing. The membership is really cheap, £6 for the year if your a concession, and you get a quid off everytime you go, so you only pay £3.50. They also still do double bills, which is basically a two for one, the films they pair together are always a good combo, for example, Onegin and the Piano, Matrix and Bladerunner etc.. They show upto 8 films a week at this cinema! So there is always something worth seeing there. I'm going on about this cinema abit but it's only cos it's soooo good and i go to see alot of the films i review there so, if your ever in Birmingham it's worth a visit, they do tasty homemade cakes as well. i highly recommend the chocloate slab cake, hmmmm fattening.
Click on the left button to go back to the home page and click on the death Laa Laa to the right to be taken to the Electric cinema website, which has details of what is being shown there at present.
