My Current Treadle Project

This is the 1902 treadle we bought at an estate auction on Oct. 28. The auctioneer claimed it was oak, but it definately isn't. It's in sturdy, if yucky condition. That's ok, we can handle yucky if it looks as if there's a cinderella under the ashes. The head is really difficult--years of oily grime--someone else has already tried something that silvered some of the decals--so we're working slow and trying to preserve what we can. It looks as if someone spilled dark paint on top, but it's coming off--the wood looks like cherry--nice color. There is a little water damage with loose veneer, but Ben worked glue under it and piled on the weight. It is already looking a lot better. Ben is using thinner, linseed oil mix--2 to 1, with triple 0 steel wool--lets see, not to forget the elbow grease!! We bought a belt and installed it today. Replaced the shuttle with a new one, and the darn thing sews without an argument. It's harder to use than the 1912 model 66 though. We'll put up pictures when it finished--probably about a week--Ben doesn't procrastinate once he starts something--he holds the family record for building the largest deck in the shortest time!!
