Solo Tenor

This 3/4 sized Singer (a 99) came from an antique dealer in a neighboring town. He was tucked out of sight in the store room where no one could see him or use him. His case has terrible! Someone brushed on a heavy coat of shellac, complete with runs, thin places, and was just a general mess.

Singer 99 Bentwood Case (Before)

This singer came from an antique store. It was in the store room, perhaps because of its appearance. The case was solid, but had at least one extra coat of Shellac poured over it (painted?).

He cleaned up well, and is certainly capable of performing Solos. His case is in the process of being re-finished.

Singer 99 Bentwood Case (After)

The re-finishing was accomplished by using a mixture of Thinner and Boiled Linsead Oil, about a three to one mixture. After the initial clean up, the rest of the old finish was removed using Woodfinisher's Pride. This is a fairly mild stripper with a, not to unpleasant, Citrus odor. After wiping it down, the remaining stripper was cleaned off using the thinner/linsead oil mixture. After the clean up, two or three extra coats of the mixture were applied, with a final finish of two coats of Bartley's clear gel Varnish, followed with a coat of Howard's Feed & Wax.
