Healing Charlottesville

The purpose of this website is to entertain a political theory that the assumptions and fears of urban renewal contribute to modern problems.   The talk of an ideal neighborhood today is institutional memory and desire to bring back Vinegar Hill and Garrett Street.

I can't bring them back.   So I invented a time machine to take you back to those neighborhoods.

Real Time Machine

Click on photo at left to print larger version.   Take photo to south parking lot of Garrett Square.   Stand with the Ix building at your back.   Hold this photo in front of your face.

I guarantee you will travel 35 years back in time.

Click for larger view. This lady lived in the house above the boy's head.   She rented the house and rented rooms to boarders.

Click to view alone. This divorced father rented one of her rooms.   With urban renewal, he bought a house and moved to North Garden.

Click for larger view. Photo of the living room of this lady's daughter.   The daughter rented and had three children.   The lady lived across the street and owned a century-old, two-story, full-basement house.   In the top photo, you were standing in her front yard.

Click for larger view. Another view from this lady's front yard and one of her grandchildren.

If you have a photo from the past you'd like to share with the community, I would be proud to post them here.   Personal histories would also help us rediscover our past.   Let's share our memories to build a better Charlottesville.
