For Parents, Librarians and Teachers

Children, especially upper elementary age boys, are fascinated with this subject.  It is a great introduction to science and weather as well as a great way to teach about tornado safety.

This WebQuest was created with home schooling parents and the public library setting in mind.  It is intended to be used with children grades 4-6, but can be adapted for younger children by reading some of the materials to them or by only using part of the product.

Other ideas for learning more about tornadoes.

Get the children involved in interactive activities online. Some of these are:

The Interactive Tornado, can you change the intensity of the twister by changing the diameter and/or the core pressure difference? http://whyfiles.org/013tornado/3.html

Visit the National Weather Service site and see where current storm watches are: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/index.html

Write to a storm chaser and ask questions.  For a list of storm chasers visit:   http://thedixons.net/stormtrack/whoswho.asp

Most of all the kids love the audio and visual parts of learning about tornadoes.  Try integrating a tornado experiment or video.  And have fun!!
