Time: The time period for this book begins in the 1920s, the 30s, all the way up to the 1950s and a little bit more.

Conflicts: In the story there are many conflict, such as Ruth dealing with Racism because she is Jewish, James dealing with his stepfather death, and Ruth's secret love affair with Peter.

Foreshadowing: In the book Ruth fall in love with an boy name Peter, who is black. To me this show that she will begin to like black people, inwhich she did. In fact she married a black and had some children with him.

Historical background: The book is an auto/biography of real people. James Mcbride is a musician.
