Chapter Summaries

Chapter 3 Kosher

    In this chapter she talk about her father, Fishel Shilshy taking her and her family to America. She can't really remember the journey from Poland to America, the only thing she remembers is carrying important document and legal paper in a shoebox. She also talk about how her father threaten to send her and her family back. Her father also talk how he escape from the army and the Russian. She talk about visiting her grandparents. She said visiting her grandparent make her feel good and comfortable. She talk about her religion and tradition, for example the Sabbath, she talk about eating certain meat and meals. She talk about her grand father death, and how they spit when the say death in Yiddish.

Chapter 6 The New Testament

    In this chapter James talks about coming to church with his mother and family. He show how much his mother loves going to church, even though she is the only noncolor/white person in the church. The Rev of the church he attend is Rev Owens. Rev Owen is thin man who wore polyester suits and styled his hair in the old slicked-back conk, combed to the back in rippling waves.He's a man that start the service clam nice, then just bust into it. He doesn't read that real, because James said when he read the bible verses he stutterer. He also talk about his older brother Billy, Richie and uncle.

Chapter 9 Shul

    In this chapter Ruth talk about how hard it is being Jewish during her time. She also talk about how she gets mock at school and how she often try to find way to run away from it. She never really had any friend or didn't make any because of her race, but soon meet up with a kind girl who didn't care she was Jewish. Her name is Frances and later became they best friend.

Chapter 10 School

    In this chapter James think about his mother's religion, and notice that he doesn't really know that much about it but imagine some of it. He talk about how his mother act sometimes. He also talk about how him and his brothers and sisters useto spend hour studying. Education was important to James's mother because she remember when she was that age she never really had the opportunity to get an good education. Since they grew up in an Jewish neighborhood they were sometime like the only black kid in school and often face racism. James talks playing jazz as way to escape the racism he face. James often act his mother about racism, but she would just change the subject. Like when he ask about his mother's relatives, she would just talk about his father side. He often felt like if his mother was black then everything would be better. His family meet with racism when his brother Richie was arrested for a crime he didn't do.

Chapter 11 Boys

    Ruth talk about meeting with her childhood friend name Peter. They would have to meet secretly, because they live in the south and he was black. Who faced constant threat from the KKK. Later Ruth got pregnant, Peter was the father.She never told anybody about the child, because of racism. Her mother soon founded out about Peter and Ruth secret, silently told Ruth go to New York for the summer. She and her mother never talk about what had happened, she felt thankful that her mother never told anybody.

Chapter 12 Daddy

    James's father, Andrew McBride, died when Ruth was pregnant with James, but found his stepfather, Hunter Jordan as his father, he also adopted all eight of Ruth's children. Hunter Worked for the New York City Housing Authority as a furnace fireman. Hunter worked and saved up enough money to buy a house in St. Albans, Queens, but on the workweek live in his Fort Greene, Brooklyn apartment. When James was in his teen Hunter suffered from a stroke, but when Hunter came home from the hospital, he had a talk with James telling him to look after Ruth and his brothers and sisters. Two days later his stepfather died.

Chapter 13 New York

    Ruth went to live with her aunts in New York City. Ruth's aunts treated they own daughters better then Ruth. They often gave regard Mameh little respect, mostly due to her disability. Ruth's grandmother, Bubeh treated Ruth well. Ruth was also gracious about how her aunt Betsy's treatment of her. Ruth told Betsy that she was pregnant, after being ask repeatedly what is the matter. Aunt Betsy didn't tell and helped connect Ruth to a doctor that was willing to perform an abortions.
