Siena College's Medieval History Club
Hawks' Aerie is the Medieval History Club at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. It was founded at the request of some professors who were starting Convivium, an Interdisciplinary Medieval and Early Modern Studies program, as a way for students to have a fun and activity-based way to supplement their learning about the period and cultures of the era, i.e., history, but fun.
The club's aim is to study the medieval and early-modern periods through research and re-creations, i.e., making the food, clothing, armor and tools, and then to use and experience them, to the end of getting a deeper and more complete knowledge of that often-misunderstood era of history by re-living parts of it, instead of simply seeing authors' views of it through books.
Towards this goal, we have held practices and workshops on such things as medieval dance, clothing construction, armor-making, weaving, and other subjects. We also conduct or attend such meetings in conjunction with other local groups who share our aim of experiencial learning of the Middle Ages.
