EARWAX RETRO FANZINE tribute to:
THE BURNT and HEADACHE RECORDS
Return to intro
THE BURNT were one of the earliest PUNK bands in New Jersey. Formed in 1979, they were influenced by bands such as THE RAMONES, DEAD BOYS, SHAM 69, and local bands like T.M.A.
Hailing from Midland Park (in beautiful Bergen County, NJ.), they started off playing local "bars" with Metal bands - they would pretend that they were a Metal band to get the gig - as bar owners never knew at that time "not" to have a Punk band - but quickly learned. The biggest haunt for THE BURNT - and the home of their now famous "Power Drinking" legacy, was JT's in nearby Suffern, NY. But it didn't take them long to hook up with The Brighton (in West Long Branch) and get noticed by Mark Chesley and
MUTHA records.
In the early 1980's,
THE BURNT "Where's My Head" LP became one of the first releases on the Mutha Label.
The BURNT were a true "working class" band that wrote non-political songs about working, drinking, and all the dumb things that were particularly native to Northern New Jersey. Being Punk was just a natural side effect of growing up and hateing the music that was playing in the clubs at the time. Spiked hair, Punk clothes, and all the rest of the Halloween effect that went along with the "classic" view of Punk, was not where the BURNT were at. Tee-shirts, jeans, hard music, and a great sense of humor were (and still are) the cornerstones for the BURNT and HEADACHE RECORDS.
The
BURNT and EARWAX always had a good relation. We did a lot of drinking, shows, and articles in New Jersey. Key points of interest included: The Brighton Bar, The Rat Trap Cafe (aslo known as The Belmont Cafe), The Showplace (in Dover), and more hall shows (in the best of NJ's cornfields) than any of us can remember. The shows were always a great night of fun because this band knew how to have fun and hit hard. Nothing plastic here.
Though there are few
BURNT recordings laying about - and they only toured once or twice - here's a laisting of some of the material that (may be) still available. The BURNT went on to become THE WRETCHED ONES - are probably one of the best Punk band...period - and HEADACHE RECORDS continues to release great Punk records.

A note of special mention:
Armpit (Armen) - has been doing this, helping bands, and supporting the scene for longer than most site visitors have been alive. Unlike many showgoers, he always watches the bands perform, listens to the music, and shakes their hands at the end of their set. Along with THE BURNT, THE WRETCHED ONES and HEADACHE RECORDS, he is one of the pillers of the NJ Punk culture. We owe a debt of thanks to him and his (continueing) efforts.
