Rupert Oysler Harmonica |
Most children acquire a harmonica and maybe even learn a few songs, and that is how Rupert got his start with this amazingly versatile instrument. Later, as a student at Brown University he began to seriously learn, and was playing professionally by the time he graduated in 1970. Spending the next few years as an elementary school teacher he brought the harmonica into the classroom, while participating in the folk music revival thoughout the northeast. During this time he also taught himself to play guitar, banjo and dobro. On a pilgrimage to the southeast seeking the roots of blues and folk music he met his future wife and settled near Knoxville, TN. There he helped to build a unique music store that included a music academy, where for the next ten years he taught harmonica, banjo, guitar and dobro. Rupert developed a group teaching method that he also presented at the University of TN, Cleveland State Community College, and Roane State College. He continued to perform locally and at folk, blues, and bluegrass festivals. In the early '80s he left fulltime music to start a retail fitness business and began training as an Alexander Teacher. Rupert continued to play and record and spent some time in the early '90s recording in the studios of Nashville. His work can be heard on June Appal, Rounder, and Flying Fish records. During this time he also became a pioneer in playing all the chromatic tones on a simple diatonic harmonica, and won two awards at the International Harmonica Competition sponsored by Hohner. In 1999 Rupert settled in Carolina Beach and reunited with a long time musical partner to form acoustic duo 2 Blue. They perform fulltime in the Wilmington Area. Phone#: 828-262-1088 |
