| Retirement party of John & Mary Miller Friday 6th July 2007 Oh what a night! After the arrival of the masses, and there were many! The Master of Ceremonies Neil McGregor, and the many other speakers, Lord Provost Robert Winters, Father Willie Slavin, Rev David Lunan. All spoke in praise of John and Mary with so many emotionally sad and happy and funny stories, that brought the audiance to tears of joy and laughter. The Castleton Primary Choir conducted by Elspeth Shearer who also ended the schedule with a very beautiful solo. There was also songs by the "Jeely Piece Club" children. The speakers said what the people of Castlemilk and beyond wanted to say personally to John and Mary. Thanks for giving us your valuable time and support, help and advice, compassion and skills, love and kindness, sadness and laughter, for over 36 years of your lives over and beyond your call of duty, 24/7. How can that ever be replaced? How can we ever thank you. After the first half of all the kind words that were said, the buffett was served in the school hall, and what a spread that was! Fantastic. After finally trying to get back to the Massive Marquee Tent! I must admit I was one of the hundreds piling the cards into John or Mary's hands and trying to grab John to thank him again before squeezing in for a fly photograph, of which I'm sure John was not aware of just how many people were taking photos or grabbing his arm while he was talking to others... Flash, Flash It was... The Castlemilk Paparazzo! Flash Flash. Maureen Douglas Chairperson of The Jeely had the audiance in tears of laughter telling us about her childhood stories relating to John Miller's Jumble sales, etc. Ann Lyall Former Deaconess Castlemilk East Parish, also praised John and Mary's work. A poem by Margaret Rice was recited. A presentation of a cheque for £14.000 for The Friends of Murambinda Hospital. From donations for which John and Mary would not recieve any gifts, instead were donated money, and was recieved by Dr John Connolly on behalf of the Friends of Murambinda, Zimbabwe, Where John and Mary are retiring to. Mary first said her very emotional and funny speach and followed by John's very funny and emotional speach, I think there was hardly a dry eye in the house, through tears of laughter or sadness. It was a night that I'll never forget and neither will the many who were there to the end. To wish John and Mary health and happiness where ever they are in the world. They will always be in our hearts and memories for a very long time. And we will never forget what they did for The people of Castlemilk and Glasgow. Zimbabwe just don't realise how lucky they are when John and Mary Miller step off that plane and into their country. They have been blessed just like we were for over 36 years...
