The Happy Scamper

Dealing with clutter

Scamper owners are forced to confront their tendency to accumulate things. We live in an economy that depends upon our shopping. We are tempted by advertising constantly. We have become addicted to the high that we experience when we bring home some new item.

Add to this, the fact that we live in a society that loves to give gifts, or at least feels obligated to give gifts.

We not only have to find room for all the stuff that we bring home, we also have to find room for all the gift items that we receive from family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

We are drowning in our own possessions. We have to build storage sheds, move into bigger houses, or rent storage space to find room for the constantly growing collection of stuff.

I suspect that some of us take up RVing simply as a means to escape out from under a mountain of clutter. But once we hit the road we have to deal seriously with the temptation to acquire things. We cannot continue to purchase items at every stop. We must learn to be contented with what we have.

We have to begin thinking like back packers. Every items takes up space and weighs something. We must choose to leave many items behind when we pack up to leave. We must take only the barest of essentials. We must plan to wash our clothes more often. We must plan to purchase our food on a daily basis. If we purchase gifts for family, they should be shipped home rather than carried in the Scamp.

Space and weight are not our only concerns. Additional items require more work to store and clean. Just one item left out of place in our Scamp can make it seem disorganized and cluttered. These small travel trailers are designed efficiently after many years of experience. They are not meant to carry cargo. Everything has its place. Storage space has been designed only for necessities.
