MINOR TRANQUILIZERS
- Tranquilizers act as depressants to the central nervous system and are
used to calm, induce sleep, or decreaseanxiety.
- Tranquilizers depress the effectiveness of the central nervois system
which in turn slows the body down.
There are two types of tranquilizers:
- MAJOR TRANQUILIZERS

These tranquilizers are known as "anti-psychotics", which are used
for the treament of mental illness.
- MAJOR TRANQUILIZERS

These tranquilizers relieve anxiety, calm the user and promote sleep.
They are under the class name benzodiazepines, a class of drugs that
have become the most prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders.
Examples include Valium, Serax, and Dalmane. This report will focus
mainly on minor tranquilizers and these three specific examples.

Some other names for minor tranquilizers are tranks, downers, antianxiety
agents (anxiolytics), happy pills, BZD's, mood modifiers, and mood elevators.
Minor tranquilizers fall under two class of benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepines I: white, creamy or yellow powder, crystalline or fine.
Example: Alprazolam (Xananx), chlorazepate (Tranxene), chlordiazepoxide
(Librium, Novopoxide), diazepam (E. Pam, Valiu, Vivol), iorazepam 9Ativan),
oxazepam (Serax), V's (Valium).

Benzodiazepines II: white or yellow crystalline powder.
Example: Flurazepam (Dalmane, Novoflupam, Somnol), nitrazepam (Mogadon),
temazepam (Restoril),triazolam (Halcion).
What It Does
- To Your Mind: Activates specific brain receptors.
- To Your Body: Interferes with control of movements.
