Reef Updates:
Feb 04
Our reefkeeping experiences began  three years ago and have instantly turned into an obsession.  We have admittedly made more mistakes than we care to mention but have had several successes also.  Here we simply wish to illustrate our slice of this wonderful hobby (obsession).  Here is a picture of the 75 Gallon that we upsized. Currently, we have a 135 Gallon which we are looking to upsize (hence the insanity).

Setup:
The tank is a 135 Gallon acrylic tank from Sealife Systems 68"L x 18" W x 25" H with its own associated sump and skimmer (run on Mag drives).  We have found a desire to upgrade to the new Marine Technical Concepts HSA3000 with an Iwaki100RLT.  We are anxious to get this skimmer online.  We have heard that it is a beast.  We have also recently purchased the ProCal Calcium Reactor by Marine Technical Concepts.
Extra circulation is provided by four Maxi Jet 1200's.  The current tank has roughly 140 lbs. of live rock and maybe a 3-4" gravel bed.  We just recently added more gravel to the gravel bed.  Lighting is provided by (5) five-foot VHO bulbs (two Aquasun's and three Actinics).  We found a great deal with Brian at  hellolights for these.  There is also a CSL 1/3 hp chiller with a Medusa two stage controller and two Won brothers 250 heaters all found at Champion Lighting.

Make-up water and water changes are all via a Kent Marine 35 GPD Reverse Osmosis / DI unit.  We try and perform a 5 gallon change every week.  We are pretty diligent about water changes.  We also have a 25 Watt UV Sterilizer by Aqua Ultraviolet, though we go back and forth about using it.  Any comments on the use of a UV Sterilizer would be welcome.  We think that this was a leap before you look type purchase.  As it stands, we are ready for the next tank which is in the planning stages (How BIG????).
As you can see by the oversized skimmer and Calcium Reactor recently purchased, we are already prepping for the next tank.  We are excited about attempting to make our own live rock for the system according to the Aragocrete plans laid out by GARF.  LeRoy and Sally Jo Headlee do a tremendous job there.  Everyone there is extremely helpful and nice.  We have several of their reef plugs with coral cuttings in the tank.  The colors are amazing.

Inhabitants:
There is a very large brew of hermit crabs, astrea, and turbo snails from
Marine Depot Live.  We currently have 5 cleaner shrimp in the tank (the babies are great for the reef) .  We have a plethora of corals, mostly soft, along with 5 clams.  There are 5 green chromis, a yellow watchman goby with a pistol shrimp, a flasher wrasse, a solorensis wrasse and 2 oscellaris clowns which serve as dither fish. Our obsession is completely centered around surgeonfish - Yellow, Purple, Desjardini, Kole, and Hippo.  This prompts the need for an even larger tank.  We actually started our saltwater quest with a 29 Gallon Reef, which was sized up to the 75 Gallon and then the 135.  It's a hobby!  We are continually changing our minds about the size of our next setup..
