A Wee Bit Of Historyanimated scottish flag

Glasgow dates back to the 6th century although there is little in the way of recorded history until the 12th century. The name Glasgow is derived from "glas cau" which means "green hollow" or "dear green place". I feel the City is aptly named due to its many parks. Close to Kelvingrove Park stands Glasgow University which was founded in 1451 and remains a popular choice for scholars worldwide.

In 1636 Glasgow became a "Royal Burgh" and in 1654 the City Council bought land, in recognition of trading opportunities in the new world which created Port Glasgow. In 1707 The Treaty of Union with England allowed new opportunities for the City and vessels were built to trade with the Americas. The Tobacco Lords became exteremly weathly and this wealth is still reflected throughout the city. When you come to Glasgow please look up at the buildings. This is where you will see the wealth of the past, in ornate carvings in the wonderful sandstone buildings.
Glasgow is known worldwide as an industrial city made famous by its shipbuilding. It is now an international shoppers pardise, a city of culture and a wonderful place to visit.

Visitors to our city are often amazed by the amount of choice they have in things to do. There are free museums such as The Kelvingrove Art Galleries, The Burrell collection, The Transport Museum and the Hunterian Museum, to name but a few. There are several wonderful parks where you can stop and have a picnic, or feed the ducks. A great place to go is The Botanic Gardens where you can find squirrels and blue tits so tame they will feed from your hand. For those who like to shop there is everything to please. The budget shopper can visit "Paddies Market or "The Barra's", and those with deeper pockets can go to Versace's, Gucci's or Armani's stores to be found in the Italian centre. The young at heart have so many bars and nightclubs to choose from that I will eventually add another page to this site, so please come back and visit.
