Dates for Hajj 2001 Dhul Hijjah 1421H |
Allah
prescribed Hajj once in a lifetime upon the Muslims who have the means
and are physically able to perform it. There are three types of Hajj:
Hajj at-Tamattu', Hajj al-Qiran and Hajj alIf rad. In this article, we
will explain the procedure for Hajj Al-Tamatt'u as it is the most
recommended one.
In this type, one is to perform 'Umrah during the Hajj months (i.e. Shawwal, Thul-Qe'dah and the first ten nights of Thul-Hijjah) and to perform the Hajj in the same year with a sacrifice slaughtered in Mina on the day of Eid AlAdh'ha (The 10th day of Thul-Hijjah) or during the days of Tashreeq (i.e. the 11th, 12th and 13th day of Thul-Hijjah). The pilgrim may remove his Ihram garments and resume his normal activities between 'Umrah and Hajj. It is necessary to make the Tawaf and the Sa'i twice, the first time for 'Umrah and the second time for Hajj. We describe in the following the sequence of the Hajj journey. |
Hajj al-Ifraad (Hajj
first) A pilgrim wears Ihram for Hajj only. When he reaches Makkah,
he performs Tawaf for his arrival and Sa'yi for Hajj. He doesn't shave
or clip his hair as he doesn't disengage from Ihram. Instead, he remains
in Ihram till after he stones Jamrah Al-Aqaba on the Eid day. It is
permissible for him to postpone his Sa'yi for Hajj until after his Tawaf
for Hajj.
Hajj al-Qiran (Combined Hajj and Umrah) A pilgrim wears Ihram for both Umrah and Hajj or he wears Ihram first for Umrah, then makes intentions for Hajj before his Tawaf for Hajj. The obligations on one performing Ifraad are the same as those on one performing Qiran, except that the latter must slaughter whereas the former is not obligated to do so. The best of the three forms is Tamattu'. It is the form that the prophet encouraged his followers to perform. Even if a pilgrim makes intentions to perform Qiran or Ifraad he is allowed to change his intentions to Tamattu'; he can do this even after he has performed Tawaf and Sa'yi. When the Prophet performed Tawaf and Sa'yi during the year of the Farewell Hajj with his companions, he ordered all those who hadn't brought sacrificial animals to change their intentions for Hajj to intentions for Umrah. cut their hair, and disengage from Ihram till Hajj. He said, " If I hadn't brought the sacrificial animal, I'd have done what I've ordered you to do." Hajj al-Tamattu (Umrah then Hajj. Most foreign Hujjaj perform this.) A pilgrim wears Ihram for Umrah only during the months of Hajj, which means when he reaches Makkah, he makes Tawaf and Sa'yi for Umrah. He then shaves or clips his hair. On the day of Tarwiya, which is the eighth of Dhul-Hijja, he puts on his Ihram for Hajj only and carries out all of its requirements. |
Umra (sometimes referred to as The Lesser Pilgrimage) consists of the performance of a set of devotional rites in the Masjid ul Haram in Mecca. These rites also form an integral part of Hajj, and were prescribed by Allah and Rasool Allah (pbuh). Umra may be performed at any time of the year and as many times as you may wish. The following are the essential elements of Umra: 1 . Changing into Ihram at Meeqat, followed by the pronouncement of the intention (niyyah) to perform Umra and frequent recital of the Talbiyah thereafter. 2 . Firist and every circuit around the Kabah Istilam Hajar ul Aswad frist three circuit around the Kabah Ramal afterTawaf ul Umra of the Kabah followed by two rakah salat us sunnah behind Maquamu Ibraheem and partaking of the waters of Zam-Zam . 4 .
