Serving the city of San Angelo.

HFHSA

HFHSA is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

On June 30th, the San Angelo Downtown Lions Club dedicated house number 25, a specially-designed house for the visually impaired. Habitat of San Angelo has joined other Habitat affiliates in a partnership with Lions Club International to build homes with special accommodations for people with disabilities. This effort was made possible at the local level by the Dynamic Downtown San Angelo Lions Club, with help from the American Institute of Architects and the San Angelo Health Foundation. Our partner family, the Unger's, have two children with a degenerative eye disease that will eventually leave them completely blind. The home, the seventh one to be built at the Basil Court addition, includes special lighting design, rails and more to help accommodate the children's needs as they get older.

Our next dedication is for the Martinez Home and is scheduled for August 30th. Angel and Kristine and their three children will be the newest members of the Basil Court addition.

Volunteers are always needed for Habitat's ongoing building projects. We are continuing to work at the Basil Court addition, located at Howard and Raney Streets. Construction work takes place Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 4pm, with a break from Noon to 1pm on weekdays and sandwich lunches provided for volunteers on Saturdays.

There are many construction tasks for professionals, and there are constant learning opportunities for everyone else. In addition, volunteers are needed to help with feeding volunteers on Saturdays, fund raising events, donating materials or money, collecting beverage cans for the Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes program, or serving on the Family Selection/Partner Committees.

Habitat for Humanity of San Angelo will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Habitat for Humanity Internation by hosting a 25 Hour Build-a-thon, beginning at 6pm on Friday, September 7th, continuing to 7pm on Saturday, September 8th.

If you would like to volunteer for the 25 Hour Build-a-thon or help sponsor this event, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss ways that you can partner with Habitat to build a better San Angelo! For more information on any of our volunteer opportunities or upcoming events, please call our office at 655-7535. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
