OLD SUBMARINE IS SOLD ----------------- |
Dr. Gibbons Will Present the Holland to City with Best Claim |
The submarine Holland, known as "the
mother of all submarines." which has
been on exhibition on the lawn of the
Commercial Museum has been pur-
chased from the local firm to which the
Government sold it for scrap metal, by
Dr. P. J. Gibbons, of New York, and
his son, Austin Flint Gibbons. Dr. Gib-
bons announces that he will present the
pioneer submarine to the city which es-
tablishes the best claim to it. Dr. Gib-
bons is said to have paid $500 for the
boat. Elizabeth, N. J. seems to be the only city so far that wants the relic. It was in Elizabeth that John J. Holland, in- ventor of the boat, had it built. The city authorities had written to Secretary of the Navy Daniels. Secretary of War Baker and Dr. William P. Wilson, direc- tor of the Commercial Museums, before the boat was sold to Dr. Gibbons, say- ing that they wished to place the Hol- land on a pedestal at Recreation Pier, near the old shipyards site. |
