NOTICES YAHOO GEOCITIES IS CLOSING PERMANENTLY AS OF MONDAY OCTOBER 26/09 I am attempting to relocate this site to a new web host and will inform the school when and if that is successfully done. |

That's Tim checking his water temperature while Danny and Matt add the last of their insulation to their container while waiting to measure the temperature in their insulation projects. Starting with boiling water students measure the temperature each minute for twenty minutes to see who has constructed the most efficient insulator. Their insulator is constructed from a 4 litre ice cream pail containing 250 mL of boiling water in a beaker surrounded by any safe non-commercial insulating materials that the students are able to devise after researching heat and its transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation.
HOMEWORK This site will no longer work as of Monday October 26, 2009 (see above). Users would be strongly advised to copy this page and all linked pages that are a part of this website to their own computers before that date. |

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The LSS Science Department Policy Statements summarize expectations for students regarding behaviour, supplies, attendance, and safety. In addition they include detailed instructions for notebook organization as well as accepted formatting for laboratory reports, graphs, diagrams, and scientific data tables. Click to download the pdf file.
The Science 08 Honours course at LSS covers much the same content as the regular Science 08 course but at a considerably accelerated pace and with more in depth study of selected topics. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Mathematics 08/09. Some of the Science 08 learning outcomes must be met through student projects completed outside of class time. Click here to download the pdf file of the Science 08 Course Outline including the Ministry of Education Prescribed Learning Outcomes as well as the Course Content. It is important for students and parents to understand that students may be accelerated in Mathematics but not in Science in Grade 8. However students whose academic achievement in Science 08 Honours is outstanding may be offered the opportunity to enroll directly in Science 10 in their Grade 9 year with the understanding that they would thereby miss the entire content of the Science 09 course. Since the content in Science 10 is for the most part unrelated to that in Science 09 this would not be problematic except in chemistry.
That's Melissa and Chantelle checking out the compression of air in a cylinder as they carefully pile weights on its piston. By comparing the relative amount of compression for gases and liquids they are accumulating evidence for the kinetic molecular theory of matter.

Brianne, Amber, and Shannon investigate magnetic properties of matter (above left), then joined by Sarah (below), they experiment with the expansion of heated liquids and gases while gathering more evidence for the kinetic molecular theory of matter.
