Canada Healthier Than U.S. for Homeless NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -
Surviving homelessness seems to be easier in Canada than in major US cities, new research suggests. The death rate among homeless men in Toronto is about half as high as rates in Philadelphia, Boston and New York, according to a 2.5-year study of men who used homeless shelters in the Canadian city. While homeless men in Toronto have far higher death rates at all ages than men in the general population, they still fare much better than their American counterparts, according to Dr. Stephen W. Hwang, of the University of Toronto in Ontario. His report is published in the April 26th issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. In his research, Hwang compared the 1995 death rates of homeless men in Toronto shelters with statistics from similar studies in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. He found that for men aged 25 to 44, the death rate in Toronto was 48% lower than that in Boston and 39% lower than the New York City rate. Among men aged 35 to 54, Toronto's death rate was 58% lower than Philadelphia's. Toronto's lower murder rate and lower incidence of HIV may explain some of the differences, Hwang suggested. Yet this does not account for all of the difference, he noted. ``We need to understand to what extent it is due to better access to healthcare in Canada,'' he said. In an interview with Reuters Health, Hwang stated that one reason for the discrepancy may be that homeless Canadians have greater access to healthcare. An estimated 40% have a primary care physician, and three-quarters have seen a doctor in the past year, Hwang noted. Independent family physicians are ``widely available'' in poor Toronto neighborhoods, whereas homeless Americans generally see doctors only through special programs, according to Hwang. The US statistics in this study were gathered in the 1980s and early 1990s. Advances in HIV treatment and lower murder rates in US cities may have improved things somewhat for the homeless, Hwang noted.
