PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT--Our New Place on the Web
Dr. David Vocke and Dr. Greg Bryant of Towson University created this web site for teachers in MD and around the country to create exciting lessons and performance assessments using web based resources and lesson plans.  The site supports ELED 685 and SCED 779.  To register for these courses for Summer 2001, check the Summer Registration Bulletin or contact us via

What is Performance Assessment? Maryland WWW Links Related to Understanding Performance Assessment
Performance Assessment is known by many names such as authentic assessment, MSPAP, and other names.  As an assessment device, performance assessment places the learner in new or novel situations requiring the learner to apply knowledge, skills or attitudes previously learned.  Performance assessment demonstrates the learner's ability to integrate knowledge, skills and processes.  The learner is required to perform a task rather than to select an answer from a ready made list.  Evaluation of the response is based on criteria called a rubric.  Performance assessment relies heavily on the learner's ability to use written language.  For more information, go to

With the demise of MSPAP, we believe that perfomance assessment will take a back seat to any new testing.  Since Social Studies will not be tested, we suspect that very little Social Studies teaching will occur in most classrooms.  We will be working on ideas to encourage Social Studies teaching and will use this page to project new ideas.
