Unit background & history:
The fourth iteration of the GUNDAM series designed for newtypes based on data from the RX-78-2 GUNDAM unit piloted by Amuro Ray.  Using a RX-78-1 GUNDAM unit as a base, the prototype unit was upgraded and adapted for newtypes by greatly increasing thruster output and adding a magnet coating to all the joints.  The new prototype unit, the G-4 GUNDAM, nicknamed "Alex," proved to be too responsive for a normal pilot.  However, in addition to the superb maneuverability and reaction speed, the G-4 could be equipped with a set of Chobham armor plates, an idea born from the FA-78-1 Full Armor GUNDAM project.  While the added Chobham armor increased survivability, it lowered mobility and maneuvering performance.  The G-4 GUNDAM was also designed with a new cockpit system, one that made the entire cockpit a monitor as to allow 360 degree viewing around the mobile suit.  However, the linear cockpit seat and panoramic monitor setup disallowed for the core block system.
Combat record:
After construction completion in December of UC 0079, the G-4 GUNDAM was transferred from a Federation Arctic base to a secret research facility in one of the colonies of the neutral Side 6.  An attack by Zeon special forces failed to stop the shipment to space, and Zeon launched a special forces insertion into Side 6 to destroy the unit before it finished its final testing.  Test pilot 1st Lt. Christina Mackenzie managed to defeat the single Zeon MS sent to destroy the G-4, but the Chobham armor was lost in the attack.  A last-ditch attempt by the Zeon to destroy the G-4 GUNDAM succeeded in the decapitation of the unit and injury to the test pilot.  The war ended shortly thereafter and the G-4 was never repaired and the project dropped.
Armament descriptions:
Basic armament:

60mm gatling cannons "vulcan guns" - Dual, head-mounted, triple-barrelled gatling cannons in caliber 60 millimeter.  Each gun is loaded with 400 rounds of ammunition and fires at a rate of 1600 rounds per minute.  Primarily for the elimination of aerial and light armor targets.  With sustained fire, can cause damage to enemy mobile suits.
90mm gatling cannons - The G-4 GUNDAM has two forearm-mounted, internal, triple-barrelled gatling cannons in caliber 90 millimeter.  The gatlings "pop-up" from inside the forearm when in use.  Each gatling is loaded with 500 rounds and fires at a rate of 1000 rounds per minute.  Excellent for the elimination of heavier armor, although the 90mm round lacks sufficient punch for the heaviest of armor.  The 90mm gatlings are unavailable when the full armor option is used.
Blash*XB-B-09 (Blash eXperimental Beam saber)
beam sabers - Slightly improved over the original RX-78-2 GUNDAM's beam saber, the G-4's beam sabers have increased operating time increased to 65 seconds, and the blade shape has been optimized for superior slashing and thrusting action.  Recharge time has been decreased to 14.2 minutes.

Hand-carried armament:
Bauva*Norfolk XBR-L Type-3 (Bauva Norfolk eXperimental Beam Rifle Long-range)
mega particle cannon "beam rifle" - A Bauva Norfolk design, the XBR-L Type-3 beam rifle is for use exclusively by the G-4 GUNDAM.  Increasing energy capacitor charge to an average of eighteen (18) rounds, Bauva Norfolk improved nearly every aspect of the Blash beam rifle including decreasing weapon size and weight, as well as fitting a more receptive targeter.  Maximum effective range of 2.2 kilometers.  60 rounds per minute firing rate.

Optional equipment:
RX*C-Sh-05 UBC/S-0003 (Renpou [Federation] eXperimental Compact Shield)
shield - Hand-carried or forearm-mounted, the G-4 GUNDAM's shield is a superior design while lacking some of the features of the standard EFF shield.  More resilient to enemy attack by incorporating reactive armor plates onto its surface.  Used only by the G-4 GUNDAM.
