Guide Dogs for the Blind

Hello! We are a group of adults and youth dedicating our time to raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, a non profit organization whose mission is to provide visually impaired people with guide dogs, so that they can live and work in their communities throughout the United States more independently. We are a 4-H club through Washington Co., Oregon.

We take these puppies into our homes to raise, train , and socialize from about eight weeks to the age of fourteen to eighteen months. In addition there are also dogs that become available at various times to finish raising, co-raise with a partner, or puppy sit. For more information on raising guide dog puppies click
here. After the puppy has come of age, he or she is recalled back to Guide Dogs for the Blind for formal training in the harness. There they go through a period of specialized training with a professional trainer who prepares this very special dog to guide a blind person. Upon completion of training, the dog is matched with a visually impaired person who will live on campus for a month while learning to work the dog in training sessions every day. Upon completion the raiser will be asked to come to a graduation on campus where they will present their dog to the graduate in a formal ceremony.
