What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a national service movement aimed at "Getting Things Done" at the community level.  It is an opportunity for Americans 17 years of age or older to make a commitment to serve their country through community service, including education, public safety, environmental, and other human needs.  In exchange for a year of service, AmeriCorps Members earn educational awards to help pay back student loans or to finance college, graduate program, or vocational training.

The AmeriCorps program was launched on Guam in June 1995.  The program became available to the local community through the Office of the Governor, Federal Programs Office.

Funds received from the Corporation for National & Community Service were subgranted to Catholic School Service, Department of Parks & Recreation, Inafa'Maolek, Inc., Sanctuary, Inc., and the University of Guam, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences.

In 1998, the program was restructured and centrally administered by the Governor's Community Outreach-Federal Programs Office (GCO-FPO) with volunteers recruited by three placement sites:  Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR); Department of Youth Affairs (DYA); and Guam Public Library Systems (GPLS).

Americorps Members at DPR will develop positive relationships with senior citizens by assisting them with recreational activities in adult day care centers throughout the island.
DPR also provides mentoring services to at-risk youth between the grades 4-8 to develop positive study habits.  AmeriCorps volunteers conduct mentoring services in consultation with teachers and counselors at various elementary schools and community centers.

AmeriCorps Members at DYA provide mentoring services to at-risk youth under the Jumpstart and Aftercare programs.  Members at this site also assist DYA clients and others in need of GED preparation.

GLPS develops a positive attitude toward the library by providing structured activities for children and other clientele of all ages through the Saturday Reading Project and Summer Reading Project.
