History
We have been ranching in west Texas all our lives and border collies have been an integral part of our workforce. Twenty-five years ago we bought a red female whose parents originated in Scotland. We have continued with that bloodline, in fact we have puppies that are fifth generation. In the '90's we ran Angora goats, sheep, and cattle in rough Pecos county. When it was time to shear, the goats were difficult to gather---impossible without dogs. The slick rock on the hillsides and thick cedar in the draws were the goats' favorite hideaway. Our dogs became adept at trailing the goats and working as a team to gather these aggravating beasts. We have since moved to Upton county with sheep and cattle in Upton, Midland, Pecos, and Crockett counties. With the stock dogs we can keep our labor expenses to a minimum. Showing cutting horses keeps me busy. I work my horses on wheat cattle. My dogs help me gather them and also I have a couple of dogs that are good turn back help. The border collie's superior intelligence, loyalty, and eagerness to please never ceases to amaze me. I rarely drive out on the ranch without at least one of my steady companions.
