This is a "Council's Own" Try-It from Tanasi Girl Scout Council.  It is not found in the Brownie Handbook.  If you earn this Try-It, you must purchase it from their shop.

First, we learned what kinds of animals made good pets for our lifestyles.  We made a poster illustrating these animals and why they made good pets for us.  We also showed the kinds of animals that would not make good pets for us.  (Click on the pictures below to get information about caring for each of these animals.)

We talked about the pets that we have (or want) and how to take care of them.  You can find out what pets we have by checking out our Friend's Scrapbook.   You can also meet our cyberpets.

We visited a veterinarian and learned how to keep our pets healthy.  We learned that we could prevent most illnesses by getting them the right vaccinations.

We found out that many, many dogs and cats in our city were killed each year because they could not find a loving home.  We learned about a unique place here in Houston called Special Pals who would take these unwanted pets and care for them until they could be adopted.  (Visit this web site to look up "No-Kill" Animal Shelters.)

Support your local animal shelter.  Adopt a loving pet from there and save a life!

After we learned about Special Pals, we wanted to do something for them, so we sponsored a Pet Parade for our troop.  Each girl brought a bag of food or other item for the shelter as their "entrance fee" to the Pet Parade.  She then showed off her pet to everyone.  Prizes were given to pets in many different categories such as Best Behaved, Best Trick, Best Dressed, Friendliest, Oldest, Largest, etc.
