2/26/05
– Hey all. I think the last time I updated was Tuesday. What’ all been happening? Chem test went ok I think. I have to finish up a few bugs in my EG project and turn it in tonight. The engineering test was pretty easy.
Been a good start of the weekend so far. Ate dinner with Ron, Claire, Katy, Carol and Will. Played some poker. Lost 10 bucks and had to buy back in but then ended up coming out 4 bucks ahead. Went and saw “the Life Aquatic” with Chris and Carol. Didn’t see Maria. Then Chuck and Sully were up here to see Joe I guess. I went over and hung with them for a while. Chuck and Joe are an incredible beer pong team. After that I hit up Dillon to see ATS while he was back. That was cool and rather interesting. Probably shouldn’t say too much here but it was good times.
Got Dinning in tonight. Looking forward to that. Obviously as I’m a freshman I’m not real sure what to expect but I’m sure it’ll be cool. Other than that I’m probably going to keep working on EG and maybe study for physics.
I’m afraid I don’t have any real funny stories. I’ll do my best though. Some dorm had a formal last night. So there were lots of people walking around in half undone suits and dresses that it was way to cold to be wearing. As I was walking around campus here are some snippets of conversation I overheard.
“I could never make out with a guy who had a younger sister, it’s just not me.”
“Can we stop walking for a bit?”
“Are you going to pass out?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Then no.”

What am I doing? I don’t have time for this. I have a chem. test tomorrow morning. Also now I get to go to PT as well! Oh well, no use bitching. I guess I’ll just take my chem. test while I’m wearing PT gear and am nasty. Eh oh well. I also have the engineering test coming up and the project to. Physics test next week to I think. It never ends. Oh well
Not tons new otherwise. Weekend was fun if nothing terribly exciting. Friday….. um what did I do Friday? OH right, Second City was here. Went to that show which was quite good if a little short. After that we came back here and watched family guy. Saturday I did some work and that evening Ron’s mom was in town for his birthday. She was kind enough to take us all out to dinner. We went to Papa Vino’s, nice place. We then came back here and watched Napoleon Dynamite. First time I saw it. I thought it was ok if not great. Maybe it grows on you. Also it would have probably been nice to not know every joke before I saw the movie. We also watched this hilarious DVD Ron got of little animals getting killed in amusing ways. Right up my alley.
Sunday was mostly work. We finished filming for the HA intro movie. Hopefully that will be good. We have our last legends show this Thursday. Studied for chem. some more. Went to the chem. review, sat next to some moron who bitched the whole time about how everything was unfair and sucked. Wanted to tell him to cram it. I realize that sometimes people need to vent when there under stress but honestly this guy was just being pansy, yes tests are hard, yes you have to work in college, no they won’t you’re your hand the whole way through. He was also one of those types who thinks they already know everything. So he kept trying to tell me why the TA leading the review was wrong. He apparently mistook me for someone who cared. Very exciting weekend I know.
My funny story for the day happened I think Thursday night. I was walking back from the dinning hall at around 6:30-7ish. Some girl and who I assume was her boyfriend were walking the other way towards me. All of a sudden the girl pulls down her pants. She’s holding her pants at mid thigh showing all of south quad her panties. She was saying something to her boyfriend like, “of course I would, look at me.” That’s all I got, sorry, I’ll try to see more funny and amusing stuff

Fun with cab drivers
Yeah so nothing much is happening so I’m gonna write about the funny stories cab drivers tell me when I ride to the airport.
First one isn’t really that great but eh. This was Friday afternoon when I was going out to the airport to find out my flight was cancelled. The guy had a mullet about a foot and a half long with a goatee. He was wearing a brown leather jacket and a white shirt with blue jeans. Now I’m not one to judge by appearance, he seemed like a pleasant enough guy but he looked like epitome of white trash. Think Joe Dirt. Anyway this guys story was that he used to live in Florida. He was born in South Bend but moved away after high school. He moved down to Florida and worked at a restaurant down there. He said he love Florida. As he put it, “wine, women and water.” He told me he eventually meet a girl down there. She had horses and was real into riding and hiking and outdoorsy type stuff. He said that he came back to South Bend to visit some friends and hooked up with a girl he knew from high school. Long story short he ended up marrying this girl from high school. When he told the girl he had been seeing in Florida she lost it, apparently she had wanted to marry him and he had no clue. So the cab driver moves back to South Bend to live with his new wife. They divorce in a year. She takes a large chunk of his money. Now he drives a cab around South Bend and doesn’t know why he doesn’t move back to Florida. Very touching I know.
While were driving he has the CB or whatever on so we can hear people calling into the cab station. This little old lady calls in. the conversation went something like this.
Operator: ABC Cabs, how may I help you?
Old Lady: Is this the cab company?
Operator: Yes it is ma’am.
Old Lady: Are you running today?
Operator: Yes we are ma’am, do you need a cab?
Old Lady: Well will you be running at 10:00 tonight?
Operator: Yes ma’am we will.
Old Lady: Will it be a long time to get a cab?
Operator: Well its Friday night so we will be busy.
Old Lady: Will I have to wait an hour?
Operator: No ma’am it won’t be that long.
Old Lady: Well ok I’ll be up at the elk’s lodge after bingo, if it takes a while I’ll go over to Wendy’s and get a soda.
Operator: Ok ma’am I’ll send a cab to the elk’s lodge at 10.
Old Lady: You’ll pick me up then?
Ah senility. On the way back form the airport Sunday I got another interesting driver. This was a large fellow. Said his name was bear. He had me write down his number if I ever need a ride, to call him personally. He said he’s been working the campus for 12 years. Said he would also take groups of students on longer trips to. If me and some friends ever want to go down to like Purdue for a game or up to Ann Arbor I’m spossed to call him. He also will take 4 or 5 students down to Florida for spring break(Although he tells me he’s prefer to do that with girls). He says he figures if he gets 4 or 5 girls to put in the price of airline tickets he can rent a decent van and drive down to Florida for a week. He says he’ll cook for the kids and been at their call 24/7 for a week. He tells me he is an accomplished cook. He says the only person who doesn’t like his cooking is his dad. Says he does a lot of Italian food and loves to go fishing and get fresh fish to grill up.
Then he told me about how his daughter was 17 and he would love to get her to into Notre Dame but he doesn’t think she is smart enough. He then said he tried to tell her she should join the army and try to play for the army softball team. He was pretty sure the army has a girl’s softball team.
Well then he found out I was an engineering student. He started telling me he also runs a lawn scaping business. His dream is to open a driving range. He says he wants to design it tiered. He wants it to slope at the end to one side so all the balls will collect in on spot. He told me he planned to set up a conveyer system there to bring back the balls and this would save him on labor costs. He said he’d send out his scantily clad daughter every so often to pick up stray balls. He said he thought this was a good idea because the customers would appreciate the show but no harm would be done because he’d be there.
Apparently he really wants to do this. He says after a few years if he’s running in the red he would want to install lights and run the place 24 hours a day. Then he says if things go real well he thinks the real money would be in franchise. About this time we’re to campus and I thank him for the ride and pay him. He says to call him sometime and say “Iowa boy is calling about the golf range,” and he’ll be happy to let me in on the ground floor of this if I help him design this place. I told him I’d keep him in mind

Happy valentine’s day everyone. Or as the cool kids say, “V-day”. See I don’t really think that’s a good thing to say. Cause with the vagina monologues going on at the same time and all this stuff about “V-week” (Vagina week), people like me get confused. We see things like signs that say “get her a V-day gift” and we think, “you give gifts for this??!! What am I spossed to get her a box of tampons? HAPPY VAGINA DAY SWEATIE!!!”
It has occurred to me that I could write these updates on a program that has a spell check function and copy paste the text to the HTML editor then add the mark up. That would improve my spelling etc. However if I know myself I’ll still find a way to baffle the spell checker.
Ok so on to what’s happening. It’s been about a week since I last updated. A fair amount has happened. I had tests in physics, American politics and calc last week. They all went decent if not great. I’m still waiting to see what I got in poly sci. Since I spent all the beginning of the week studying, all my homework was left to Thursday night. Basically shitty week all around, little sleep, lots of stress. But then the weekend. I got to go home and see Megan. That would make any amount of tests and stress worth it. Not of course that fate would make things simple for me. When I go to the South Bend Airport Friday afternoon they tell me and the other 25 or so people in line that United has cancelled the flight from South Bend to Chicago. WTF not like weather or anything they just cancelled the flight. How the fuck can an airline do that? So they had to put me on a freaking bus to Chicago to go to O’hare to catch a new flight from O’hare to Cedar Rapids and get in like 3 hours later. This did not make me happy, 3 hours later means I miss my diner reservations. So I’m pissed off.
Eventaully though I do get into CR and Megan meets me at the airport and that makes me happy. I was so dead though from the previous week etc and because we had missed our plans we just got a movie and watched it with my parents. We got “the Notebook”, which I didn’t think was as good as it was cracked up to be. Saturday we met Katy at the mall, we then went skating and I almost killed Megan. We hit the mall up again cause my dad wanted to get my picture taken by the portrait people there. We got dinner with Jay and Katy which was uproariously funny. We then went and saw “Hitch” which was pretty good.
Going back to school Sunday was also a hassle. Again my flight was cancelled for no reason at all. FUCK YOU UNITED AIRLINES. Long story short, they pushed me back like 3 hours and got me on a Northwest flight through the Twin Cities. When we were pulling out of the cities they told us there was some computer error….. basically another 4 hours delay. I got in at 1 this morning. I was not happy.
Hanging out with Megan was wonderful. WARNING: SAP TO FOLLOW. Being with her just makes all the trouble hassle more than worthwhile. Being away from her is so crappy. I’m just incredibly thankful we’ve been able to work things out with a long distance relationship so far.
Also it was very nice to see Jay and Katy. I miss all my friends from high school. There are lots of cool people up here and I’ve made many new good friends but that simple fact is I’ve only known you all for like 6 months. While I look forward to deepening our friendships I’ve known some of these people for 4,5,6 and more years. Nothing can ever replace those friendships.
This is an incredibly long entry and I sound like a lovey dovey pansy. I blame this on not eating for the past 24 hours. I’m probably gonna go try to find food. Peace out

- Hey whats up internet. I got like 10 minutes till egineering lecture. Weekend went ok. Friday night was kinda a bust. We couldn't get a plan of what we actually wanted together, so we just kinda wasted time and sat around. Back up a minute. Earlier friday night me, Will and Ron went to this lecture about the year Einstine published 5 of his big papers. That was fairly interesting. It was a little over my head but cool non the less. Backing up even more I guess I haven't written here since I went to the Philharmonic. That was incredible. We got a double encore. Very awesome experience. Ok now that I think that's all covered back to the weekend. friday again kinda a bust.
Saturday I worked over my physics practice tests which wasn't so hot. I'm gonna have to work on that more tonight to get ready for my test tomorrow. What else did I do saturday? Went and got supper with Chris and Carol. Then we watched Lawrence of Arabia. I had never seen it before and it's like one of those "big movies" that your supossed to see. It was kinda odd. Took a long time before it seemed like it decided what it wanted to be about. But once it got going I was pretty hooked. After that I went over to Welsh Fam and watched the last 3rd maybe of "THE CORE!!!!" which is perhaps in the top ten of bad movies. One of those movies thats so bad its funny.
Sunday was homework, HA practice and the superbowl. Frankly I didn't have a huge interest in the game since I had little connection to either team. The commercials were defiantly sub par this year. The bud one with Cedric the entertainer and his fantasy was good as well as the Busch one with the returing troops. I missed most of the pregame pomp and circumstance but the little I caught seemed to be very pro america and pro military which is cool. Then after the game American Dad premired, I thought is decent but defiantly not outstanfding. Maybe it will grow on me I dunno. Had a good time hanging with Maus, Andy and Rich watching the game and all.
The rest of this week is going to be rough with several tests and other stuff. I guess I'm just gonna have to buckle down and get r' done. Anyway I'm gonan go grab lunch and go to egineering. Over

- You ever have one of those moments were things are going well and then something hits you. Yeah so its been a long day but I had been able to keep on top of everything got most of my calc finished and made it to the chem review session, had to miss HA practice but was able to go watch the state of the union address. I get back home, check my mail get ready to boot up matlab and get engineering finished and for some reason it hits me. I missed color gaurd practice. Well crap. That really sucks. Well can't change the past I guess. Guess the best thing to do as always is just to try to do the best in the future. Oh well damnit. Well besides that shit. It's my dad's birthday today. I talked to him for a while, that was good. I was able to get tickets to the philharmonic. Some people didn't claim their raffle winnings so they just sold them first come first serve. I sat in line for like 2 hours but I figure it's a small price to pay for cheap tickets to the New York Philharmonic. So me Dezzie, Ron and Claire will go to that tomorrow. Superbowl is this weekend of course. Not sure what all else is going. Well I'm gonna get back to finishing up my homework. Bye

- College would be so cool if it wasn't for the school. I've said that before but it's so true. Oh well things really aren't so bad I just bitch a lot. and it's Monday, you're allowed to bitch on Monday. Fine weekend if not overly exciting. Mostly just hung out. My Uncle John was in town saturday night so he took me to dinner which was cool. He also brought stuff from home. So I got cookies and my tax returns. They don't really balance out. I need to figure out where I get my W-2 from the Navy. I wonder if maybe some accounting major would do my taxes for me. Sunday we started up IPT again, that was joyous. Then had HA practice, we've had better I think. But we had just had a show and we were kinda low on the creative juices. Went to mass Sunday night and father goerge told hilarious stories in his homily.

Then today its been class and homework. I have physics in 20 minutes or so. I start chem tutoring which will hopefully be helpful. I haven't had time to look at the practice test yet. There's a high school kid coming up this thursday that they asked me to host. So I sposse I'll take him to classes and stuff. I think thats probaly the most exciting thing thats happening this week. So I'm gonna lay around for a while longer and then go sleep in physics. There is only one lecture slide posted which means he's going to spend the entire class fiddle with some demonstration that he can't get to work right and it will be midly amusing. Out

- So technically I guess it's friday. TGIF everyone. It's been a little while since I last updated. Been kinda a busy week. Honestly I should be getting ready for class and going to be rather than messing with this crap. Had a fair bit of homework and class and all. kinda sucks becuase this was fairly normal. I had like no large assignments or anything unusual come up, just weekly stuff. So this semester might kinda suck :-( Eh what have been the highlights of the week. Monday Trident asked for a couple people to go out and babysit grad students kids so they could get a night off. I went and did that. Basically it was me letting these kids jump and climb on and hit me for 2-3 hours. I can't believe I ever had that much energy. I got a hug from one of the little girls though cause I drew her a picture of a pony. A "my little pony" to be specific. I can't really remember what else went on this week. I must have wasted a lot of time cause my homework was on me at the end here. The big thing tonight of course was the HA show. this was the first time I made the cast so I was excited and nervous. From the accounts I've heard I think I did well which was pleasing. I was surprised that it fely different on stage than other things I've done likw Mock Trial or plays or speech. I didn't get the stage fright, sweaty palms fast talking that I sometimes do. I sposse I could simply get better at preforming or maybe is has something to do with the nature of improv where you're mind is focused on coming up with jokes you don't worry so much about how you're doing. I think I'm going salsa dancing with Dezzie this weekend. Looking forward to that and whatever else mischeft I get into. But I really should get my crap together for tommorow and catch some shut eye.
