I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

Screaming, gore and push-ups? There is more that this horror flick offers. The movie is refreshing and serves as a great appetizer as one awaits impatiently for Scream 2. The amount of suspense and cheap-thrills will make one addicted to the high hours after the show. If the blend of young babes,cool hunks and violence is your cup of tea, you’ll have to catch this fast!




KISS THE GIRLS

Much like Sean Connery’s Just Cause, this thriller functions more on mystery-solving than on victim-slashing. A rather thoughtful script with minimal action yet containing quite a dosage of suspense. Offering Ashley Judd her 1st prominent leading role, this movie showcases her talent but fails to draw crowds.




SPICEWORLD **

Other than the music video-like segments of the ‘film’, the rest can quite safely be missed. This disappointing docu-movie about the Spicegirls is not half as entertaining as their chart-toppers. The jokes are trite, its spoofs distasteful and the characters lame. What a fall for Alan Cumming of Emma fame. Spicegirls fans, you too should be warned.




THE FULL MONTY

A classic example of a low-budget and simple but nonetheless great film. Costing a mere US$3 million, this Irish-accented movie is in a league of its own. A hilarious and endearing script about 6 men seeking self-esteem by baring it all. This film explores personal issues in a comical style, winning itself a slot in the ever-so competitive best picture category at the Oscars. The fact that the academy chose The Full Monty over Amistad and The Boxer has to mean something, doesn't it?



GATTACCA

About the triumph of the human spirit, this movie skillfully juxtaposes between what Man deems desirable and what is. In the setting where genetic engineering is considered a normality, there is seemingly little one can do to change one’s destiny. Ethan Hawke proves otherwise with a fine performance, supported by his reel/real-life interest, Uma Thurman. Thematically weighted, this film is thought-provoking and has a ‘feel-good’ effect at the end. The futuristic and clinical setting is visually impressive and most deserving of its Oscar nomination for best art direction.




FALLEN

This film has a smart ending and commendable camera movement shots but that is just about all the good points it bears. The haunting music and its diabolic entity draped a real sense of malevolence but, wet-blanketed by a poor screenplay, the movie becomes stale and almost b-rate. In short, it is The Devil's Advocate minus the horror and depth.
